For a while now I'v wanted to start listening to metallica however I don't know where to start. I'm a bit catiuous as arn't some of their albums really bad?

So what albums would you suggest I go for so as to save any wasted money, thanks gaf.

Not in to them, but isn't the formula the same for almost any band...start with their early works first?

Not really, you wouldn't listen to idlewilds early stuff before there newer stuff for example

Just do it chronologically, like most of us did.

And then you will also see that Metallica after 'And Justice For All...' is not really Metallica :).

But generally speaking this tends to make sense. There aren't many bands with a long tenure that exceed their early or original output. Yes there are exceptions, and some fans like the later works, but I think most of the time my statement is true. Plus, wouldn't you want to see how an artist has progressed?

Fair enough, but really I just wanted their best album so I could see if I like them.

I would then listen to the other stuff after that.

Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
...Justice for All
Black album

If you can choose only one, get Master of Puppets.

Metallica is my favorite band, and I originally got into them with the black album. From there I went chronologically starting with Kill Em All.

What songs have you heard that you like? That might help us recommend appropriate periods. Personally i listened to them until And Justice for All, but i was like 13 when that came out. Dunno if i could have gotten into them later in life, although i really like their old albums. I was just listening the Kill Em All the other night.

I started with And Justice for All and bought all their earlier albums shortly thereafter.

I would start with Master of Puppets. It's the one I started with and got me hooked. I like all of them though. Definitely check out the Symphony album, I don't care what people say but I liked it.

With that in mind, the last album is shit. Grrrr tick tick tick tick tock, Grrrr tick tick tick tick tock. Fuck me, please shoot me in the head now. And this is coming from a die hard Metallica fan.

p.s. Once you get into them, check out there Garage Days album. It's pretty sweet.

S&M is an excellent intro into Metallica. As is just about any live bootleg that you can find floating around (and hey, they're free and semi-legal). If you're not into live stuff (even though it's really the band at their best), the Black Album is the easiest to get into and is pretty good. I consider Master of Puppets to be their best work (as do most), but it's thrashy at its core and that doesn't sit well with a lot of people.

So, it really depends on what you're looking for out of the band.

Start with 'With Teeth', Downward Spiral, Year Zero, or Ghosts I–IV... wait thats NIN.
F*ck metallica, listen to NIN.

Same here - aside from St. Anger, they haven't made a bad album, IMO. The last few (aside from St. Anger :D) have been different but they're still entertaining and fun albums. I like Load and I like every song from the Black album. I still think And Justice For All is their greatest album but they've had back-to-back excellent albums for many years. And Justice For All is probably my favourite album of all time though

Ride the FUCKING Lightning is one of the strongest, focused, hardest Metal albums I've had the pleasure to headbang to. It also has Fade to Black, their masterpiece.

It's my favourite.

Not really comparable...

and you left out The Fragile and Broken

Most of Metallica's stuff is top notch, except for St. Anger...don't forget the S&M album!

Immediately listen to Metallica's live double cd/dvd with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. It's my most cherished cd. It will give you the right dosages from different periods of Metallica and you will explore them in more detail from there as each one peaks your interest.

Enjoy.

Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are classics.

I still remember the sense of awe I had when I listened to the first song off of Master of Puppets: Battery with accoustic guitar intro that is then replicated on a fully distorted guitar. The Thing That Should Not Be and Sanitarium are great...and I love the instrumental Orion.

I'll try to be useful.

The guys who say start with Kill 'Em All have a point -- it's awesome, raw, Motorhead-style stuff. Maybe the final cherry on what Sabbath started.

Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets and And Justice For All represent the bands continuing evolution into modern pop thrash. They get more technical, more long winded, more self serious as they go. There are still some really bruisers mixed in there -- especially Damage Inc. -- Each record also holds portents of the thrash ballad. A bad scene.

Black is the bands poppiest album and, in a very real way the beginning of the end. It's when they let Bob Rock into the room. And they've pretty much blown since.

EXTRA SPECIAL ASIDE:

The $9.99 EP Garage Days Re-Re-visited may be my all time favorite of their recordings. It's the band doing covers -- them at their most unrestrained. Whatever made this record awesome died somewhere on the road. Because the recent collection of covers also blows.

ehhhhh.

I find it crazy that people who are into Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets won't give other bands a chance like Exodus, early Testament, Overkill, Sodom, Heathen, Forbidden, Vio-Lence, etc. Same circle of music style, same circle of friends. Just shows they are Metallica nut swingers. Be adventurous and venture outside of Metallica for once. Just sayin

Definitely start with the basics. A lot of people will tell you to start with Master or Black album, but I would say just start from the beginning and work your way up. My favorite album of all time is Ride the Lightning. So good.

Also, the new album is coming out in September and its called Death Magnetic. New US tour this october.:D

The first 4 (Kill em' all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and And Justice For All) are probably their best work. My person favorite is Justice for all, but all are great albums. I like most of their albums (except Saint Anger) and think that even Load and Reload have some stuff worth listening too, although its different from their 80s stuff.

i didnt think both loads were that bad, if they were by any other band besides metallica, i think there would be less hate

the outlaw torn has a pretty badass solo in it

Both Load and Reload are really good albums but they catch hate for not being "Metallica" albums. They did however make a return to long songs on that album though people don't give them the credit for it.

Beware fans who say they don't like The Black Album. That is pretty much as good and polished as music gets on this planet as well as featuring some of the heaviest tracks the band has ever done.

BTW, anyone who holds shit against them because of Napster and the right for them to control their music GTFO. It is their right to charge for their material and distribute it as they please.

I love all those bands, but Metallica at their peak were slightly catchier and more melodic than "traditional" thrash, to my ears. The only band in that list I might recommend to budding Metallica fans is Testament.

To the topic at hand, I'd have to say start with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.
