What would I need equipment-wise and how much would it cost??

You need a shit load of bandwidth if you expect to be successful. Start saving for at least a leased T3 line but more like an OC3 - especially if hosting video.

You can get by with a series of Dell Rackmount webservers and a large number of fiberchannel RAID arrays. Make sure they are hotswappable.

You'll need a system to cool all of this equipment just like the big boys use so dedicate a room and hire someone to bring in an environmental system to accomodate this. You'll likely also need dedicated power as your home wiring likely won't take the load of this much equipment.

Start reading up on firewalls because people will be trying to break into your site almost constantly if you have any decent content.

There may be legal concerns regarding permits in your municipality so research that before you even seriously consider this as it may be a non starter depending on where you live.

You could talk to rackshack, ev1servers, serverbeach, etc. and just lease servers from them and let them deal with all the pain of keeping the site up.

That made me laugh to the point everyone in the office is looking at me.

Do you want to host a site or create your own. I would think that the only sites that make money are the ones with some original content, not just the canned stuff. Get a couple of DV cameras, get an apartment to film in with some nice furniture, and alot of hoes. preferrably some known hoes but mostly some hot local hoes.
 
I can recommend ev1servers but you may be interested on talking with them about your content (they are super-reliable and they won't rip you a new one in your wallet, ev1 domains are also dirty cheap) If you are feeling a little lost or your are not trying to bring up a pro site there are adult host specialists out there, google a bit and you'll find a lot of them

The equipment is the biggest expense. It really depends on what kind of site you are trying to open up. Seems that the "reality" sites are the real moneymakers nowadays. It seems the variety of girls is more of a draw than a single-girl site.

I can direct! But only straight porn, no fruity shit please. I've always dreamed of being a porn director or photographer. I'm good at that kind of stuff. I also could be a good producer also. I know who to ask and how to ask for the money needed.

PS i'm desperate and need a job and this would be one of my dream jobs.

Well, I am just in the research stage right now....

I have a business partner who is willing to put up the money and I would like to host it myself if possible.....

I am not getting into porn and I am happy with my wife to provide all my banging needs...I am purely looking into this to make money...

I see stuff like porn vidcaps out there but I would think a person might get into legal problems if you bought a DVD for $40 and uploaded the stills?

Do you just pay money for a CD full of stills and upload *that* to the 'net?

I don't think you'll really get anywhere with public domain content, and that's if you find any because most of the "public domain" stuff I see is really licensed content with the urls cropped out.
