Houston, Texas (AP) -- An explosion at a chemical plant Friday that could be heard 20 miles away caused a large fire and sent up massive clouds of smoke. No injuries were reported.

Several tanks and a building were on fire at the Marcus Oil & Chemical plant, but officials did not know what caused the explosion or what was in the tanks, said Tommy Dowdy, a district chief with the Houston Fire Department.

Streets were closed off around the plant, but there were no evacuations. Dowdy said the three people on duty at the plant were not near the explosion.

Lenny Ogle, manager of a gas station half a mile away, said the explosion shot flames about 75 feet in the air.

"It shocked the whole neighborhood. ... First it was the explosion and then it was the fire and then another explosion," he said.

Houston Fire Department District Chief Phil Boriskie said a hazardous materials team was conducting an evaluation. He said there were no reports of chemical exposure.

Marcus Oil & Chemical, owned by privately held HRD Corporation, makes polyethylene waxes, according to its Web site.

I had something similar happen to me about a month ago. I was watching TV after getting off work around 11pm and eating dinner. I kept dozing in and out of sleep when I suddenly heard this strange "BOOM rumble rumble rumble BOOM" wake me up suddenly. I got up really fast trying to figure out what was it I heard... my most immediate thought involved someone slamming the door down stairs to the garage but it didn't seem right for some reason. I thought about it for a moment and walked out in the hallway to see my parents walking around looking through the windows.

After a call from the neighbors, we find out that there seemed to have been an explosion two houses up, but no one really knows. All we saw was a field of fire growing at the lot 2 houses away and the first thing I think of is to call the police. My mom was freaking out and over-reacting, imagining our house burning down and rambling to herself about how we have to get moving or something. Then my dad suddenly runs outside to check out what the hell happened. At yell at him for heading out because, afterall, would you head to the site if there was a possibility that it was caused by an explosion? He runs out anyway and I chase after him -- but the concern becomes more curiosity the close I get to the site.

Anyway, there was a billow of smoke rising from the bottom half of the hill -- the fire department arrives within 3 minutes and they start putting out the fire while a few cops investigate the area below. My mom starts asking around for information and runs into an old friend who saw what happened.

Apparently, there was a man wearing all black hovered over a car that he lit on fire, pushed down the hill, and left to blow up. The first BOOM was the car's initial explosion, the RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLE was the car rolling down, and the second BOOM was the car crash landing into an empty house lot. Ou neighbor wanted to chase after the guy and beat him down, but he'd be stupid to do so because they found the duffle bag the arsonist left to contain an aluminum bat.

We had a fireworks warehouse catch fire. It looked awesome, with fireworks blasting nonstop for days, but it took down that whole neighbourhood, 150 houses left burnt to the ground or beyond repair.
