So what happened to Metroid Dread?

They probably realized that there wasn't any point in publicly showing it if it isn't coming out this year, especially with two other Metroid games already in development.

It's listed in the latest Game Informer, so I'd think it's pretty likely that it's in development. Maybe it's more than a year off, but how many years has Geist been at E3? Zelda? There's also a ton of Mario games in developement so I don't really see that arguement. It would be nice to have confirmation on it at the very least though. At least then we'd know it's coming.
 
The DS had a pretty nice lineup, and there were plenty of Metroid games there already, so I imagine they're saving it for another time. And no need to take the attention off Hunters.

They also didn't show Zelda (to keep focus on TP, which isn't even on the same system and is only one game, unlike what's happening with Metroid), Super Princess Peach or Pokemon Pearl/Diamond, and we know they're coming, so don't worry about it.

Yeah...Nintendo could have REALLY blowin' its load at E3, I'm guessing. I mean, even as it is, a lot of their own DS titles got almost completely overlooked (Mario and Luigi 2, as the biggest example) because there was only so much press for the system. They've got a lot in the DS pipeline, and it's making for a robust lineup...keeping some of it underwraps is probably a smart move. It does likely mean we're waiting until Summer 2006 for Dread/Zelda, though.
 
Zelda is all new, but I'm not sure if they've said 2D or 3D yet. As for Metroid, think about the sweet vertical platforming the DS will allow them to do!
 
I'm sure Hunters will get a lot of publicity here, while Dread might get a Japanese release first since it caters more to their tastes.

damn, I was sorta hoping for an OoT port with Four Swords style gameplay over WiFi.
 
From everything I've read, they didn't show Metroid Dread because there was nothing to show. When E3 came around Dread was only in the initial design stages.
 
Remember that first 'Metroid IV' unveiling for the GBA a few years ago? Looked horrible, like a barely updated GBC game. They had plenty of goods this E3 for the DS, no need to bog down the showing with stuff that just isn't ready.

Yes. As "hilarious" as those DS = map" jokes are, Metroid is one of the few series that could actually seriously benefit from it.

I don't completely understand why they showed this off instead of fucking Metroid Pinball, though.

Metroid and Castelvania (well, the new Metroid-esque ones) both NEED maps. Most the time when I play one of those games I print out a map from the net to help play it.. especially the GBA castlevanias because you move through about 20 corridoors that all look exactly the same, and I get confused easily.

As far as showing off Metroid Pinball instead of this, it makes sense. Metroid Prime: Hunters and the 2d Metroids are very similar in gameplay structure (despite obvious differences), while Metroid Pinball isnt a Metroid game at all.. just a pinball game with Samus as the ball.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. It's just, as a Metroid fanboy who doesn't want Metroid going down the path of Mario and Pokemon, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Though, from that perspective, in concept, neither Hunters nor Pinball make much sense to me at all.
 
Now, is it fun *FOR* a pinball game


or is it fun...like in general.

You now, fun in a sort of way that'd i actually want to sit down and play it.


Edit: Cause pinball games arent one of the first things i think of when i hear the word fun...or enjoyable :-P
 
Pinball games are fun when they're actually pinball simulations and not vaguely square areas with flippers at the bottom and a mascot ball thing rolling around. Pinball Fantasies and Illusions are great fun, Mario Pinball and (to an extent) Flipnic are not.

Metroid Pinball looks like a real pinball game so it could be fun. I'm not going to flush it down the same toilet as Mario Pinball just yet.
