So, what is the word on Virtua Fighter 5 ??

It's been what, 4 1/2 years since Virtua Fighter 4 was revealed, and around 4 years since it came out to arcades. VF4 is sort of like Sega's Street Fighter 2 in that it gets almost yearly updates. so when will finally se Virtua Fighter 5? when is the next major arcade show, JAMMA or AMOA.

I've seen Sega's new board called System SP. I guess this is the one with PowerVR 5th Generation graphics. I can't wait to see System SP or NAOMI 3 or whatever it's gonna be called. part of me wants it to be an overwelmingly powerful board, with 4 GPUs and TONS of memory, so that Xbox2 cannot outgun it. but then the other part of me wants it to be weaker than Xbox2, or at most, about on par with it, so that porting is relatively easy.

I don't expect Sega's new board to rival PS3 though. there is just too much time and money investing in PS3 for Sega & Imagination Technologies to beat it, unless they like crammed like 6-8 GPUs in there and 1 GB or more of ultra vast memory memory.
 
more importantly, what's the word on Suzuki? I heard a rumor a while ago that he was leaving AM2...did that turn out to be bull?
 
Yu Suzuki did leave AM2, but that was in order to head up a new SEGA development studio called Digital Rex. That reorganization was short-lived, however, when the development teams lost their formal distinctions after the Sammy merger. I believe Suzuki still primarily works separately from the more established groups within the company, though, as he's heading up SEGA's Chinese and Korean development initiative with collaborations between Sega Sammy and outside companies. The work he's recently been doing has been on the project that brought about network games like Shenmue Online.

I think Doncale was just saying that he's seen mention of the rumored arcade board that some have liberally been calling "System SP" as a codename. About the name: a lot of these rumors of tentative titles come from arcade enthusiast or industry sites that jump the gun on reports, like the incorrect reporting of a PS2 Sega Rally 3 release (which was actually just the Sega Rally remix) or their listings for a Virtua Fighter 5 debut way too far in advance.

yep, thats it. i misworded my original post. nothing concrete on System SP.... only a nextgen Sega board. the official press release by PowerVR (iirc) a few months ago.
 
I'm sure VF5 will be great and all, but right now I just want a home port of VF4 Final Tuned. Hopefully on Xbox so it can be ported perfectly.

Additionally it seems Namco's Soul Calibur 3 is being given a Xenon facelift. Lots of next gen 3D fighters coming pretty quick.
 
The new high-end arcade system and Virtua Fighter 5, which could be among the second wave of titles for the platform depending on how they R&D/launch it, might not be ready to show until late 2005 or well into 2006. Production of the chips won't be ramping up until later in the year, and, on top of that, the development schedules for top-tier games next-generation are expected to be lengthy.

Tekken 5 makes the VF5 wait a bit more bearable? Are you sure? My friend is a solid VF and Tekken fan and last night he was tearing T5 to pieces in terms of flaws! In his greatest - and I thoroughly respect - he believe that VF4 Final Tuned is STILL miles ahead of T5 and he doesn't appear to be the only person that thinks this.

So what we need really is FINAL TUNED on the Xbox, GC and PS2 together with VF1, 2 and VF3 perfect editions.

I have heard this too from two of the wisest VF and Tekkenits I know, namely Ryan and Mo (whom I seem to remember you are also acquianted with).

Personally, I'm loving T5, though I'm mighty pissed with how they've bastardised my Yoshimitsu.

Well it's true that it's not being officially released in Europe, but a machine has apparently already been bought and paid for by Ullysis. It was supposed to have been there around the middle of Feb but we're still waiting on it.
 
Final Tuned better come to consoles soon damn it.


If Sega has no real plans to bring it to PS2 or even Xbox, it would be a great launch title for Xenon/Xbox 360. IF MS is smart enough to pay for it.

I can categorically tell you that Final Tuned is not coming to European arcades. Unless of course owners decide to import it privately. I am not holding out much hope for a home version of Final Tuned, but by no means am I certain about that.

As for VF5, like I said, I think patience will pay dividends (much like VF itself dammit!). Suzuki is probably not so involved but if I am not mistaken, he hasn't been directly involved with VF's finer points since VF2, so thinking more along the likes of AM2's Makoto Osaki and Kataoka (the boss that superceded Suzuki) will continue to churn out extrenely high quality stuff. It is difficult to see how they might improve on FT though...

When MS launched the Xbox in Japan, it was just about the same time as VF4 hit for PS2. I remember thinking MS would have been better off spending their marketing budget on acquiring VF4 than on what they actually spent the money on.

Hell if exclusive VF4 had just sold as many xboxes as VF4 sold on PS2, MS would be further ahead in Japan than they are now.
 
If it comes out anytime in 2005 it's gonna be Arcade first. Sega of course is going to give it time to suck up credits in the Japanese arcades before porting it to a home console, which will bring it into 2006, maybe just in time for PS3. Launch title? Gonna happen? Who knows. Nice thought though. :)
 
It doesn't surprise me that there's no VF5 yet. From VF1-3, there were two-year waits between each version. VF3-4 was a four-year wait.

And while 2, 3 and 4 have all had revisions of some sort, I think the full-number upgrades take a while to come, especially since everyone expects pretty significant improvements.

What a shock! BTW, I thought you said Namco wouldn't start working on Tekken 5 until Sega unveiled Virtua Fighter 5?
 
VF is a Sony franchise now, like Tekken. I don't think Sega will risk changing that dynamic for any sum of money, as it is one of their few bonified hits that they can count on. Microsoft will likely have to make a decent sized dent in the japanese market for VF5 to make it to Xbox 2.
 
Im Still Waiting On Virtua Fighter VS Tekken with a little tweaking i think it could be a balanced game :)

Why not? VF4 was a pretty big seller on PS2, relative to other fighting games anyway (not that there are that many these days). If VF4 FT or VF5 looks as good or better then any fighter on the market and boasts online play, there's no reason to think it couldn't be another big seller (again, relative to the competition).

VF5 will never be a MS-only game, but I wouldn't be surprised if it landed on both XBox 2 and PS3. Though if Sony continues to drop money for the game, I guess that could keep the status quo going.
 
Big seller compared to what? Bloody Roar? VF4 didn't sell anywhere near what SC II, Tekken Tag, Tekken 4 or MKDA have done.
 
I thought both versions of VF4 had moved a half million units in North America in total, which seems pretty respectable for a fighter that's hardly pick up and play. That said I didn't think Bloody Roar had sold that many (let alone more), so WTF do I know.
 
Yeah, but the others have sold well over a million.

I don't actually know how much Bloody Roar has sold...it was just the first B list fighter that came to mind. VF probably is a lot more successful.

I agree that Adam's Akira is indeed rubbish.

Also; I will have to check this Final Tuned bidniss out. I hear they gave Brad some more Low attacks. Thank. Fuck.
