Doves are so much better than Coldplay. Not in terms of popularity perhaps, but the direction of their music and songwriting. Just listen to "Snowden," "The Storm" and "One of These Days" if you don't believe me. "There Goes the Fear" is another great song of theirs. I don't understand how Coldplay's selling X&Y like crazy, but Some Cities is basically unnoticed this year. A real shame.

I agree with you Diablos, Some Cities is as good as Lost Souls.. I didn't appreciate The Last Broadcast that much, it had some good songs.. but not to the quantity that their first and 3rd albums have had. But to me.. Coldplay's X&Y just hasn't grabbed me as their first two did - maybe it just needs a few more listens.

Snowden is amazing.. I have an acoustic version of it when Doves played a set at some Dutch club and it is better than the studio version at times. But I agree with you on The Storm and One of These Days.. they're superb tracks. I also like Almost Forgot Myself.

But if you like Doves, then you should check out Leaves. They're a pretty decent Icelandic band, not too much exposure but if you find their first album Breathe, it's got some gems.

Coldplay... I don't care for them much. They're tossed into the "overhyped poseur music" bucket that some of Radiohead's stuff fell into. I can't listen to Coldplay without getting the feeling that their hardcore fans - the ones that think these guys somehow rise above everyone else - desperately want to be considered intellectual for liking this sort of music.

And yes, agreeance with the OP. Doves & Some Cities > quite a bit of stuff.

I don't understand the hate toward X&Y (at least the GAF hate). Yes, it is perhaps more generic lyrically than their previous work (but then, they've never exactly been all that inspiring in that regard), but musically it may very well be their most sophisticated. Overall, I think it is a great record, and a worthy follow up to their previous albums.

That said, the Doves are a band I've been meaning to check out for a while.

Just get Some Cities. You won't be let down.
