Somehow, AM4 returned....

GIGABYTE just released four new AMD Socket AM4 motherboard models as gamers seek out older PC platforms supporting DDR4 memory that's available at more affordable prices. This aligns with our recent report that talks about how acute shortage of DDR5 memory is driving consumers to older platforms with DDR4, such as AMD Socket AM4, and Intel LGA1700. AMD has been releasing new Ryzen 5000 series processor models throughout these past few years even with the advent of the DDR5-exclusive Socket AM5, meanwhile, Intel's 12th Gen through 14th Gen Core desktop processors support DDR4, and there are motherboards based on Intel 600 series and 700 series chipset with DDR4 slots.

Among the motherboards released by GIGABYTE are the A520M H ARGB, the B550I AORUS Pro AX 1.4, B550M H ARGB, and A520I AC 1.5. These are all based on entry or midsegment chipset models. The A520M H ARGB comes with a single PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slot, HDMI display output, and supports all Socket AM4 processors out of the box. The B550I AORUS Pro AX 1.4 is a premium Mini-ITX board based on B550, with PCI-Express 4.0 x16, and a modern Wi-Fi 6E WLAN solution. The B550M H ARGB is essentially the same board as A520M H ARGB, but with B550 and PCI-Express Gen 4 for the PEG and M.2 slots. The A520I AC 1.5 is an interesting entry-level Mini-ITX board with Gen 3 PCIe and older Wi-Fi 5 (AC) WLAN.

So with DDR5 prices increasing drastically, systems with DDR4 have become a much cheaper option, that will should be considered for entry builds.
With a 5800X3D, even for mid range builds.
After the 24H2 update, performance increased significantly, making these CPUs much more viable.

I imagine I'll be rocking my AM4 build for a long time. Didn't see any reason to upgrade anytime soon even before the DDR5 prices went insane.

I use a 4k60 monitor, it'll be a while before Zen3 can't run games at 60fps.

hey... I'm still on AM4/DDR4
I just upgraded TO AM4/DDR4 in 2025 ...

Bought a used rig with 32gb, 5800x some fancy AiO water-cooling a nice case and no GPU for 450€ and put a 5070ti in there. It's a great machine and a well worthy upgrade to my old i7 3770 16gb DDR3 1070ti system.

LOL, I have the exact same CPU, RAM Amount (3600Mhz) and GPU.
And I have the same CPU/RAM from you old machine :messenger_grinning_sweat: (except having a GTX 770 / RTX 2060S before)

My secondary 1080p build with a 5800X3D is still going strong, it plays most games at 120+ FPS.

Heck I'm still using a 2700X and told myself I was gonna upgrade after I got my 3090 back in 2020 LOL.

Am I right in thinking that a 5700X3D is just a BIOS upgrade or were 3D CPU's not able to do that?

I'm still rocking a 5800x3D paired with a 7800 XT. I have zero complaints, it handles modern games just fine. I just played BF6 on my ultra wide with a locked 60 fps on almost maxed settings. Easy.

It chews through CP2077 etc. at relatively high settings as well.

It is a simple BIOS upgrade.

I'm staying with AM4 for a good few years yet. DDR4 has still risen in cost a lot here in the UK though. I was getting 32GB a few months ago but stupidly held off, and now it's a bit too late. Thankfully got the 5060 TI 16GB right on time though.

I'll upgrade from the 5700X to the top AM4 chip in a couple of years once it is dirt cheap.

There are still a good amount of AM4 CPUs in the market.
But yes, AMD should restart production of some of these CPUs. Especially the X3D parts.
TSMC has zero interest in increasing production capacity of nodes that old for a short run of obsolete discontinued CPU's and honestly neither does AMD. From a business standpoint it makes zero sense

Now is time for Intel to make LGA 1700 great again :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I'm still on DDR4, and I'm not changing it until we see a PS6 Pro on the line.

We still will find the good old DDR4 3200hz for a long time or at least until they stabilize the DDR5 offer/demand.

There's like no way AMD could justify restarting production. Not enough volume.

Depends on how long this AI bubble will last. If it's going for 2 or 3 years, it could be worth it to restart Zen3 CPU production.
The masks are already made. And so is the R&D for all of it.

The only reason people are interested is because DDR4 is cheaper right now... all it'd take to wipe out the DDR4 supply would be for an Big Name OEM to get goofy and sell a Raptor Lake DDR4 desktop for awhile.

You'd have to sell multiple hundred thousands of 5800X3D for it to even make sort of sense.

But the pressure from the consumer PC market is much lower than the pressure of the AI market.

5800X3D, 9070 XT, 32GB, QHD monitor.

I have the refresh rate capped at 90hz as I don't personally see any difference at higher frame rates. Almost everything I play runs maxed (no RT).

I'll upgrade when RAM comes back down and there's a meaningful step up over the 9800X3D.

Yeah, my 5800X3D is absolutely fine and will be for the next few years.

But I wanted to jump to 7800/9800X3D in early 2025, doing that back then would be a good idea (cheap RAM), oh well...

I have a real Cooler Master HAF 932 in my closet. It hosted PC builds for almost 15 years. The thing was a tank and the only reason I had to retire it was 4000 and 5000 series cards have become too long and won't fit
I still have my Coolermaster Cosmos S from 2009. Only replaced that case last year but still kept it.

I have a 5700x3d. Planning to ugprade my 3080 to a 9070xt. Gonna ride that for the forseeable future. And I'm keeping the 3080 as a backup card.

I upgraded from a 3700 to a 5800x3d last year because I felt my system reached a point where the 3700 was getting old but AM4 still had enough to offer as a foundation. As far as hardware goes, I think this was the best descision since buying a Sandy Bridge CPU in 2011.
This will be sufficient for quite a while.
