I don't know, this bad boy's screwed up. Java doesn't work anymore, in Firefox or Internet Explorer. In Firefox, quicktime and flash don't work. Then, Limewire and the Battlefield 2 demo won't start up. Both are .exe file types. I'd like to fix all this shit, but the only method seems to be bring it back to factory defaults. In that case though, I lose all my files, porn collection, music, clips of games, movie trailers, Berserk, Samurai Champloo, etc. Now, you'd probably think I might be able to save them on CD's but my cd writer doesn't work, which is non-related to the pc's screw-ups. So any ideas? Is it possible to reset a pc, only with a select few things not to delete? Or is there a way to fix everything problem by problem? My pc's just completely handicapped and I need to do something drastic to fix it.

if you're willing to spend money, you could always buy a new hard drive, put windows on it, and get a usb enclosure for the original hdd and back data off it.

Why bother with an USB enclosure? Just put the old drive in slave config.

What Shog said. Check www.techbargains.com for deals on cheap hard drives. Get in the habit of regularly cleaning out (deleting or burning to disc) files, or you'll be buying another drive to dump your new collections on in another year.

Um.. not sure how to do either. But anyway, I think a lot of this could be related to java. On the official website for limewire, it says make sure you have the latest java downloaded. So I go to download it knowing it hasn't worked yet. This is what I got near the end of the installation.

Assuming you're running as administrator in XP (likely if you're the only user), try uninstalling Java, rebooting, and then reinstalling Java. Make sure Limewire or anything else that uses Java is isn't running.

Alright, I went to uninstall java. My remove programs list shows I have java update 1 and 3 both. Anyway, the same error, 1407 and the access to the keys stopped me from both uninstalling it and installing it.

Are you running the internet update by any chance? If so, download the full update (not the internet update XPI), restart XP, and try to uninstall it. Not sure what else to recommend. Reading and googling what the Windows error report contains might shed some light on the problem.

thanks aoi tsuki. Um, yeah, not sure though what is currently installed on the HD though. On the java I tried to install jut a bit ago, I made sure it was the full one, not the internet one. I think I'll do a little research on the error though, see if I could fix it, and then try uninstalling again and reinstalling the full one.

If your PC is really quite hosed, you might try doing a "repair install" of Windows.
Just boot the Windows CD, select Install, then when it sees you've got Windows already installed, it should give you the repair install option.

This is different than selecting "repair" right from the start.

A repair install should set Windows back to square one while still leaving apps installed. However, I would't be too surprised if doing this does screw up some installed apps that are too tied into Windows.

In any case, the key error you're getting looks like some kind of permission problem or else some kind of "registry screwed up" problem. Try getting some registry fixer software if you're sure you're running as administrator.

Oh, update on this. While trying to install system pack 2 and such things for windows, i got an error in mid-installation. So now between service pack 1 and 2, it undid the changes, but said windows might not work properly. I restart it, boom, done for. So I let it go a few days, thinking time to buy a hard drive again, 1 year later. But anyway, I came back to it and tested the reinstall method and repair. This worked, only basically the pc went back to the same form. Only change being my trash can is missing, I can't find the AOL icon to sign on to that though I never use it, and... well, same problems. So now I figure, upload and email the most important files to yourself. Write down what needs to be reinstalled meanwhile. I'm going to just reformat the damn hard drive, clear the junk, and get very basic again.

Any advice on how to avoid getting the hard drive or pc this messed up again though? Just frequent deleting or is there some security programs I could run to protect it? I'm really not sure on anything I can do to specifically secure the pc so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
