So in our new house, we've got smoke detectors that are wired into out electrical system. They've got their own section on the circuit breaker and everything.

They've also got back-up 9v batteries inside in case our power goes out. The problem is, thesy CHIRP LOUGDLY every 30 friggin seconds or so.

We thought this was because one of the batteries was dead, but I've tested each battery (with my tongue!) and they've all given my uite the buzz. So, it doesn't appear to me that any of the batteries are dead/near dead.

What could be causing this ungodly noise? I'm going nuts here, as the one in my room is constantly going off all day and night, and I can't stand it any longer.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? And no, the detectors aren't signaling that there's a fire. This is a completely different noise.

I would try replacing the batteries. I know you did the tongue test, but just in case. If that still doesn't work, replace the detectors or remove them. They're overrated anyway.

If those batteries were good, you would have only tested one.

Buy a new one and see what happens with the tongue test

Same thing with my house (built 5 years ago). They only go off after a really close lightning strike. The thunder triggers them.

Any deafening noises in the neighborhood, by any chance? :)

Nope, nothing like that.

I've tested a lot of batteries with my tongue before, and these all feel like they've got a lot of juice. It's very odd.

I had that problem once. It was because

No but for real tho, the alarm had to be tested by holding the button or something like that.

i feel your pain.

the last apartment i lived in had em all over. and one of them was about 15 ft up on the ceiling.

if its not the batteries, they are not getting juice or are defective. (obvious answers) sucks though, but ya know what? you'll tune it out eventually.

The last time that happened to me it started beeping at 2:00 am. My roomate took it and shoved it in the oven to quiet the damn thing. Guess what happened when he preheated the oven later that week to cook up some chicken? I framed it and named the piece "Mike is an idiot."

Heh, this happened to me a couple months back. I couldn't reach the detector though, and it was 5 am in the morning so I took a broom and hit it until it stopped. Worked for me. Try a broom :)
