Neighbours from Hell
So, this morning I was getting ready to head out to buy groceries and there was this guy sitting on my front step of my house on his phone. I asked him what he was doing and he said "Oh, I'm sorry" and he moved to the sidewalk and stayed on his phone. Then he walked a little bit over to in front of my neighbor's house and then back to my house while looking at his phone and then looking up at my house and looking up at the house next door. I could tell by what he was doing that he wasn't just browsing or texting. He was doing something on his phone that was in relation to him being in front of our houses. He did this for about half an hour. Then he walked off. He looked about 25ish years old. Just in general he looked really shady and suspicious.

Then about a half an hour ago, there was someone else standing in front of my house on their phone. He looked 18-21ish. He was looking at his phone and kept looking down at his phone then up at my house again, down at his phone and up at my house again and doing something on his phone. I opened the front door and was like "Can I help you?" He got really flustered and was like "Yeah... I... Ummm....I'm meeting someone here." I said "Meeting someone in front of a random person's house?" And he was like "No... I mean, I'm looking for someone." I said "Who are you looking for, maybe I can help. What's their name." And the dude bolted. He looked nervous as hell.

I asked a friend about it and he thought guy #2 was trying to meet guy #1 to do something shady. But I don't know, it was a good 6 hours apart. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for one person to show up to a meet 6 hours later and not inform the other guy. And at a random person's residential home? Why not meet at a store? I thought at first guy #1 was trying to get on someone's Wifi to do something shady and that's why he kept moving around and messing on his phone... to try to get in range of an open Wifi signal(mine is protected), but guy #2 6 hours later standing in front of the same location is too coincidental. I don't know, it was just weird.

Any theories on what could've been behind it? I'm curious if there's any ongoing scams or weird Tiktok challenges going on that could be behind this. I don't feel threatened or anything in terms of safety, but the way the second guy bolted was weird and suspicious as hell in addition to how nervous he was and how flustered his voice was. And I was not mean by the way, I just spoke in a normal tone.

In the mean time I'll see if one of them or someone else comes around later today or tomorrow. If someone else does, something is definitely up.

Your first mistake was letting the first guy go until you got a proper satisfactory answer, I would've held the cunt and rang the police, that ain't normal behaviour as for scoping a house, are they fecking amateurs making it so obvious? Anyways ring the police, give them a description and hopefully they'll put it on file, I don't know where you're from but I reported some random dude in a neighbours garden a few years back, stayed by the driveway so he couldn't leave and they where on us in minutes and took him away

Thanks copilot:

Here's a summarised version in bullet points:

  • First incident: A man (around 25 years old) was sitting on the user's front step using his phone. When confronted, he moved to the sidewalk but continued using his phone. He then walked between the user's house and the neighbour's house while looking at his phone and the houses. He stayed for around half an hour before walking off. His behaviour seemed suspicious.
  • Second incident: About six hours later, another man (around 18-21 years old) was standing in front of the user's house, repeatedly looking between his phone and the house. When the user asked if he needed help, the man nervously claimed he was "meeting someone" but then changed his story, saying he was "looking for someone." When asked for the person's name, he panicked and ran away.
  • Possible theories:
    • A friend suggested the two individuals might be involved in something shady, but the timing (six hours apart) doesn't seem to fit a typical meet-up.
    • The first man might have been trying to access Wi-Fi.
    • The coincidence of a second person appearing in front of the same house later in the day makes the situation feel even more suspicious.
    • The user wonders if it could be related to an ongoing scam or social media challenge.
  • Next steps: The user plans to monitor their house in case more individuals come around, which would confirm that something unusual is happening.
Definitely a bizarre situation! It could be anything from someone tracking a misplaced device, scoping houses for something sketchy, or even a strange online challenge. Keeping an eye out is a solid move. Hope nothing more comes of it!

Either he was homeless and trying to meet up with someone or they were wanting to rob you. I would definitely get some cameras.

They're looking for a rare.

It sounds like the first guy was there to check out the area and confirm the address on behalf of the second guy who is looking for you. Congrats maybe?

I'd make note of what they looked like, and exact time you encountered both individuals. It is suspicious behaviour, and probably not coincidental. It's unlikely that they were both scouting out your house for a possible robbery, seems a little odd to do that in board daylight while siting on your doorstep. If I were you I'd hope they both found a new brothel online that happened to give an address similar to yours and they both got lost. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Yep, casing houses. Was your car in the driveway or anything to show you were home? It sounds like he could have been taking notes. Depending your local police, cameras won't do much, but you can use a ring to pretend you are home and threaten them before they enter

They may have been casing, but I didn't get those vibes from these people. The second person was a total dork. Looked like he just got off a shift at Gamestop. 19ish year old nerdy white kid with bushy hair and cargo shorts. And he wasn't exactly inconspicuous. He stood directly in front of my house and yeah my car was in the driveway. And the previous dude was sitting on my step using his phone. And when I opened the door he didn't run away and he saw me eyeballing him. He just kinda hung around. But they were definitely doing something. The block behind me is having a pretty big party going on, music has been blasting all night, I wonder if they were invited and went to the wrong block. Who knows. Either way, I'll be on the lookout.

Maybe the second guy was there to buy drugs?

If you think they looked like dorks then most likely your address was mistakenly set up as a place to buy drugs, hence why they were nervous, but that's just a theory. Even if you dont have nice shit in your house, I would not rule out the fact that they want to rob you. Call the cops and ask for their advice, but they most likely can't do anything about it, but they might've received calls from neighbours about similar incidents and perhaps they can track them. Get cameras though.

It does sound like casing the place, but they are also doing an absolutely terrible job at being discreet :messenger_tears_of_joy: .

Usually, (at least in South Africa, which I will base the experiences here on), casing is done more through foot traffic or in a vehicle. Keeping an eye out for the same car or same person passing by, generally rather slowly, is a tell.

Maybe the thought of a drug deal or waiting for a drug deal is more likely. They are told to meet by your doorstep but the dealer isn't great at staying on time :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Did you make it thru the night? They aren't friends of your crazy neighbors are they? You're neighborhood seems like a hot bed for weirdos though.

It is entertaining for us though

Do you have a nice car with remote entry and leave your keys near the door at night? Wondering if they are seeing if they can jack your RF signal.

I am not an American, but this sounds to me like they are possibly scouting your house (or the houses on your street) for a possible robbery? But then again, wouldn't they be less obvious about it? Like watching your house from within a car, parked on the street somewhere?

Maybe someone posted your address on Craigslist or something as a joke? I'd call the police and tell them about it, though.

I'm not from the US. The beginning sounded very similar. After that, parcels often arrived that my colleague never ordered. They were all bought with stolen credit cards. Could be something similar.

Another possibility is they're scouting your house for one of those "We pay cash for houses" deals. Admittedly it's not worth it since if that's what they were doing they'd offer 50-60% of the house's value.

I feel like I've now been conditioned to be unable to properly assess the threat without knowing the ethnicities of these individuals :P

Maybe they are checking the times of day when you are regularly not at home so they can sneak in and plan a surprise party for you with cake and lemonade.

I'm gonna go a different route here and say they might be johns that's been given wrong address to a sex worker. hopefully that's all there is but stay safe OP.

Go find one cop or go to their office and tell them your story, maybe was coincidence or is something but if there is something obscure they could know , also if You go to their Office at least they could be aware and do extra visits to your street/área.

don't sound paranoic just concerned, and bet they Will help You to visit your area more than usually

OP if it happens again, this time before you say anything take out your phone and start recording them. If they do end up robbing your place, you'll have their faces identified

I think they were looking for a place to start working on a car. Maybe unload it on a flat bed in front of your house and start working on it at like 3am.

Just standing in the yard....mindin' my own business.....

Something similar happened to me sometime ago

My house has 2 front gates (walled property with a garage door, a small gate + a small garden outside with a tree) and i noted a shadow behind the small one. It was broad day light so i grabbed a huge ass machete, went casually throw the trash at the can using the garage door and cut some branches of that tree outside. I asked if the guy was okay and told him to get out of the entrance gate or he would have fallen if I had opened the gate.

I turn out to be some really shady dressed delivery guy at the wrong address.

For the OP i would buy some presence lights + a surveillance camera for your front porch. If you notice something else, call the cops or go to a police station.
