Just watched this with my kids at the cinema today, I thought it was brilliant. Don’t get me wrong it’s a funny action flick aimed at kids, but as far as those go I think it was fantastic. Much better than the Mario movie and most other kids films to be honest. How SEGA have got these movies so right is a mystery to me but fair play.
It helps they already had a solid foundation for the story and characters. Aside from the RPGs, Mario’s cast has never been that strong in characterization in any media, whether games or other media, prior to the 2023 movie, whereas once Sonic entered the 3D era the games gave very clear personalities and such to the cast, and this was expanded upon with the comics, first by the Archie Comics era and now the IDW Comics era, and the multiple cartoon series that have been made.
While the movies do give some original elements to the characters (Sonic being a bit younger and sees Tom and Maddie as essentially his parents, Knuckles being the least used to the human world, etc.) as well as being primarily set on Earth, you can tell they looked to what worked with the stories of all that past media and figured out how to translate that to the film versions. I think it’s why the IP has endured for all this time, even in the rough era of games from the mid-2000’s up until now where they’re getting back on track with Mania and Frontiers, fans loved the characters, and wanted to keep following them in the games and various media all this time.
