Sony E3 2015 10 Year Anniversary

It's been 10 years to the day since Sony held one of the most memorable press conferences in video game history.

They opened with gameplay for the long anticipated The Last Guardian. Then midway through the show they dropped the megabomb Final Fantasy VII Remake announcement trailer.

A Shenmue 3 kickstarter announcement was also big (I remember Huber's reaction from Game Trailers specifically and how emotional he got).

Other memorable moments were the Horizon: Zero Dawn announcement and gameplay trailer, No Man's Sky gameplay with the endless worlds to explore demo, and finishing up with the Uncharted 4 market chase scene (although that one started off with some technical difficulties and had to be restarted).

Really makes me miss the old E3 days and the production value that went into the conferences.

The following year Sony upped the ante with the God of War live Orchestra intro.

Its fun to look back at these shows. Maybe one day Sony will bring them back.

The perfect example of actually waiting for the games to come out before getting excited.

FF7 remake isn't even finished 10 years later.

Best E3 of all time

Ueda, Suzuki and Nomura, all highlighting the industry going forward

It was epicly good. The PS4 generation was remarkable.

PS5?? Oof, not so much. 5 years in and nothing yet that's calling for me to jump on board. We'll see how Yotei lands.

I remember thinking at the time that it was an epic e3, but looking back it really puts into perspective how much gamers glaze the past.

The Last Guardian was a disaster as was Shenmue 3. No Man's Sky also launched as a disaster, though climbed back.

Personally FF7 remake was a let down, especially for such a long awaited game and GAF will tell you that Horizon sucks.

I'm glad The Last Guardian made it. ❤️

And FF7 Remake, although i hate the changes in the story, it has some cool stuff in it.

Absolutely legendary event - Gametrailers reaction was everything.

Btw, even though I was visiting GT even years before, this was the first time I was introduced to Easy Allies -Huber definitely stole the show, but at the time I never expected that Kyle Bosman will become one of my favorite people.

E3 of dreams

Techically its not finished yet because theres still part 3 to wait for and at the time they never said they are splitting the game in 3 parts for a complete FF7 storyline.

Square never said how many parts they were going to do... but they were very up front about Remake being the Midgar section.

I remember people complaining about this and saying they wouldn't play it until all the parts were released. Well, here we are 10 years later...

Man I miss E3

E3 for me back in the day was like gaming Christmas. Always looked forward to the various showcases and there were so many amazing games to play. Almost too many.

I remember how this blew me away at the tail end of the PlayStation conference:

Man, how has it been 10 years already?!? I remember eagerly waiting for a new gameplay footage from UC4, and I wasn't disappointed one bit.

Yeah, Sony was on fire from 2015 to when they stopped attending, but they were the only ones putting in that much effort. Live orchestras with gameplay reveals, and set designs to match the in game scenes. They were the biggest draw, but hey must have realized that their presence was giving Xbox and Nintendo more coverage.

Its funny to look back at this moment and actually analyze it:

The Last Guardian was…fine. But a step down from its 2 predecessors specifically when you had to deal with a dumb AI pet through the entire game. Shenmue 3 flopped and no one cared about it and FFVII Remake isn't even finished 10 years later. Its second part came out last year and underperformed.

When those 3 moments happened 2 of them weren't even games yet.

These moments are nice but its all with no substance.

Horizon and Uncharted4 were great moments.

The last good Sony show.
Nonsense, I would rate the Sone E3 2016 show even higher. Their previous show from 2015 had the better moments, but the approach to the 2016 show was more to my liking. That 2016 show is for me the one and only gaming related show you can demo to mainstream audiences and they will understand how gaming can be taken seriously.

All of this is true, and can be said to an even larger degree for the "showcases" and events we've gotten this gen.

At least our time wasn't wasted with games we already knew were going to be irrelevant. At least initial reveals of AAA games were plentiful, and even came with gameplay. Revealing Horizon with gameplay was such a fantastic move, and they did it again with GOW the year later.

These were showcases. There was effort and pizzazz, and the games were made as such even if they didn't work out.

What we have now are contractually obligated ad-runs for increasingly generic and boring products.

I miss e3. Geoff's informercials stink. He gets like 3 good trailers and puts on a 4 hour show comprised of world of tanks ads and the most boring GaaS slop imaginable.

Loved E3 and its many highlights. Sony mocking Xbox, giant enemy crabs, booing at the Vitas phone partner (verison or something) Konami being mushroom testers apparently. Nintendo with Wii Music being an embarrassment to society, and Zelda controls not registering, vitality sensor dead on arrival. Ubisoft being fucking Ubisoft having people playing laser tag through the audience and so much more.

Does anyone remember when Microsoft had a live demo of Killer Instinct and people were saying "it was like watching a rape, that poor woman" due to the way the men were talking when beating her at the game. The sign of things to come I guess.

Game Awards feel so fake, over produced, and up its owns butt.

Several E3's prior to and including 2019, Gaf: "E3 is outdated and should just die and this cannot happen soon enough"
Any summer 2020 and beyond, Gaf: "Fucking hell I really miss E3, we never realized how good we had it"

Not immediately, it wasn't until 6 months later that they actually revealed it would be episodic. I'm one of the few still waiting for the complete edition.
The Verge - The Final Fantasy VII remake will be a 'multi-part series'

Jesus, talk about time going fast with 10 years like that. Next 10 years my first kid will be touching 11and I'll probably start having gray hair. Wild.
