Approval:
-- Japan's Sony to acquire sole control of mobile phone company Sony Ericsson which is jointly owned by Sony and Ericsson (approved Jan. 26)

Sony Ericsson will be rebranded as Sony Mobile Communications. All devices which will be announced and released will be only wearing the "Sony" branding -- and there's the Xperia S to prove it.

Let's see if this will help Sony, which I guess is not at the best condition right now. Anectodally, I used to only buy SE cellphones for a long time, now I own an LG, and I guess a lot more own iPhone and Samsung.

They should of have sold their interest, not bought it out right.

Another stupid move on Sony's part. Sales are on the decline, and they are so far behind the competition I don't think they will come back, sales have declined YOY for the last 4 years and that trend will continue.

I guess bailing out of a whole market is quite damaging to a Brand, while getting stronger in a market, even in decline, will be helpful to Sony brand.

I mean, I think it would have been quite helpful to them if they had done it like some years ago and focused on it as a part of Sony brand; but better late than Never.

It just feel pretty good to have a 'Sony' cellphone back; though I guess we won't see much change in the outer face

We've known this was going to happen for a while.

What this does is make SE an actual part of Sony, which means there's a good chance of a real PlayStation Phone, one that likely shares the blood of Vita.

how has the xperia been selling?

sony should have done this back in 2007 when the sony erricson was flying and taking names. Instead they allowed the swedish part of the partnership to drag the company down. Never seen such a bunch of useless management torpedo a company so badly.

I repeat. Stringer was one the worst ceos sony has ever had.

under stringer

sony went from being number 3 in phones to number 6
sony went from number 1 in tvs to number 3.
kutaragi the wizard was thrown out. whereas the incompetent jack tretton and phil harrison were allowed to continue.
Sony vaio went from a premium laptop series to just another 'good' batch of computers

This cunt has taken out all the engineers out of the company and filled it with western marketters.

I bought an orange becuase of this

and it was awesome.

Was Harrison really incompetent? I thought he tried to wake Sony up and force them to realize that they needed a stronger social gaming presence? I really don't know though.

Since introduction they shipped 22 million (as of Sept. 2011).

I think he meant the Play.

It hasn't moved anywhere close to 22mil.

SE won't/hasn't released sells figures, and even saying "meeting expectations" is taken with a huge grain of salt.

All signs point to the Xperia Play being an utter failure in pretty much all regards.

It was a terrible concept to begin with.

phil harrison was the moron that green lighted all those millions of dollars for lair, heavenly sword, resistance when they could have spend all that money on securing exclusives from third parties that were the bed and butter of ps2

He just said Xperia, which to me meant the entire range, lol.

Maybe he did, he hasn't came back.. but the question/reply was to a PlayStation Phone quote. Leads me to believe it was the Play in question.

Sony hasn't/won't release sales figures on the Play.. which means they are bad.

wut

I don't see how them bringing the cellphones internally is a sign of them dying...
Another nail in the coffin is a bit too dramatic, but it's been a while since SE had a profitable year. Buying a company that is not making money, while you still have your own (massive) problems, doesn't seem to be such a good idea.
Very true. However, the Xperia S and Xperia Ion are phones I actually will seriously consider buying. If Sony can release more phones like those, they should be alright.
Those Xperia's were still developed by SE, not Sony.
