Sony says Over 100 PlayStation VR2 games are in development

https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/psvr2-100-games-in-development-digital-only/
Sony has released a massive FAQ about the PlayStation VR2 on the PlayStation Blog ahead of the headset’s February 22 launch. It reveals some key new details about games for the platform, namely that over 100 PS VR2 titles are in development, and that Sony doesn’t plan on giving its games physical releases for now.

For the most part, the FAQ is full of basic information about the PlayStation VR2’s specs, how to set it up, and what’s required to use it. But the Games section of this FAQ reveals quite a few illuminating details about the future of the system. It reiterates that there will be around 30 launch titles for the system, but also reveals just how much is in the works for the headset. In response to the question, “How many games are in development for PS VR 2?” Sony writes, “There are currently more than 100 titles in development for PS VR2.”

That’s a good sign, as a new, expensive VR headset like this lives or dies on its game lineup. PSVR2’s early days might be a bit odd as Horizon Call of the Mountain is one of its only true exclusives — and it’s not backward compatible with PlayStation VR titles (something this FAQ reiterates. However, those picking one up can still know that lots of games are in the works for it.

Another FAQ question asks, “Will PS VR2 games be digital only or will there be physical disc releases?” — which is sensible to clarify as this headset’s predecessor had physical games. “Initially at launch, PS VR2 games will be digital,” Sony says. “Physical disc releases for select titles may be available at a future date.

Huh, well hopefully some of those 100 games will be original polished releases to help the PSVR2 sell well. If it's Quest ports or enhanced rereleases for most of that, it will be a bit concerning.

Sony has to make sure they have the games to gain the attention of consumers, and keep them longer term, and not just the hardcore fans.

Sony also says that in the future there may be physical releases of PSVR games, an odd question since it was revealed awhile ago, there's a thread, of what PSVR2 capable and required box arts will look like. But it's good to get confirmation for those who prefer physical games.

How many are full-blown AAA games and not tech demos?
You should expect most games to be small indie or AA games. Most compatible with Quest but looking better on PSVR2.

Best case scenario is probably like 10 third party exclusives at most, and much less than that being anywhere near AAA. Probably something coming from the maker of Rez soon.

Then you'll have some support for non-VR games like RE8, Gran Turismo. Should add up to a solid library, but it's not going to be non-stop AAA.

Have they said if there's an included video/cinema app? So if I stick in my 3D Blu-ray of Avatar I can finally watch it again along with all the others sitting in a box collecting dust, even the low Rez PSVR1 was actually pretty decent for movies

This is what many are concerned about for the hardware, they wanted more exclusives showing off the headset, but if any of those Quest 2 compatible games ends up doing well than it's going to help out the Quest 3 a lot. It will then be a question of just getting the better, quality, and cheaper, Quest 3 to play those games over PSVR2 and/or _ PS5.

The vast majority of games in general are not sniffing the capabilities of ps4 let alone ps5. It is just fine if the majority of vr games are able to rrun on a quest vs the few that will require a high end setup. Those few will have a massively outsized draw. PSVR2 already has more "aaa" games at launch than quest 3 will ever have.

Sadly though, most of those will not show up on pc where they could help the cause. Hopdully there will be more high end (if not aaa) games in the future from publishers looking to make an honest profit (not subsidized or moneyhatted by sony) that will find it worthwhile to port to pc.

They’re in a weird spot regarding a showcase, because VR games don’t show well. You literally cannot show it. Makes it particularly challenging.

They can just prioritize screen-time/gameplay for the better looking games then rapid fire through the rest. Shouldn’t be that hard to incorporate VR into a full showcase, rather than doing a VR-only event.

But it's not making much of a different with those games wither, the PSVR2 should be a differentiator, if for some of these games already many announced with gameplay/trailers, are not showing a big leap it should compared to Quest 2, that's a big problem about PSVR2's prospects when the stronger Quest 3 comes out doing the same thing, for cheaper, and wireless.

TCL already plans to do this with an affordable headset with development tools easier to create better VR experiences than upscaled mobile, and HTC may have a surprise as well given their plans with their affordable upcoming VR headset, and then there are other players who may or may not come in with something new.

This is also why i believe that Quest 3 (along with 2's novelty drying up) isn't going to continue to lead VR, even on the cheap end. Right now people who are waiting, or who have moved on from VR, need something to bring them back in, they need more than an enhanced Quest 2 experience with games and other software, and they need a decent amount of it, not just a few things.

If these other headsets are able to help upgrade the games that Quest cannot, than that's when Zucker will be pushed out the market he had a head start in and his vision goes poof.

....

Why is it a problem that helping the Quest 2 means less consumers for PVR2? Quest 3 would have a similar experience, and be cheaper, and wireless, and can be used on the road or at home...

Wait, why is it not making a difference with those games? They are the headline games generating th eexcitement and that it the launch alone. Again to be clear, what is it about THOSE particular aaa games that don't make the difference.

As for expanded competition, that is really interesting. The way other commpanies keep at it with limited success. It's good things for everyone really. Even if we stay mired in mobile graphics, those will one day catch up to where they are at least not a terrible limitation.

Okay.......for some people yes. But what about "Playstation gamers"? I couldn't care less for a 65-year-old grandma that wants to jump into VR twice a year. I'm talking about Playstation gamers only!

Quest will never have the same experience. Is like comparing a mobile game with console gaming. Quest 2 is rubbish.

Your hate boner gor psvr2 is weird as fuck.

Edit: nevermind what a fucking shock reading that post history.

You should refrain making any playstation related thread.

It’s really concerning that over 100 VR games are being developed for PSVR2. Imagine if it was over 200? That would be deeply troubling.

You quoted me talking about the Quest 3 lol.

Most of PSVR2's launch line up as you said, is Quest 2 like games, but enehanced.

Again, the Quest 3 is going to do that same thing for cheaper, and there's few major experience on PSVR2 among those Quest 2-likes to get many people to invest.

If we are talking about long-term differentiation to bring more people to PSVR2, or to get pS5 users to pay the premium, it needs to have more content that a Quest 3 isn't going to bother to try and keep up with, since Quest is currently still going after mobile casual experiences. Unless they have some surprises for Quest 3 with higher caliber games which I think is unlikely.

Sony needs more Horzons, and they need to help third parties with better experiences too if they want to put in the support for PSVR2, and want to see better growth than PSVR1 by a longshot.

That's one way to show you didn't read my post at all, I was responding to someone talking about PSVR2's library being filled with Qiest 2 experiences enhanced, and pointing out the Quest 3 will do the same thing but cheaper Which apparently, you skipped over to pretend I hate the PSVR2.

You know, the guy in the post history you didn't read that posted positive news and the pre-launch game release and announcement thread, which you also skipped.

Dude we are not 5 years old. You definitely want psvr2 to fail for some reason. Or that you really aren't self aware. Majority if not all your comments about psvr2 is all doom and gloom. Acting like quest 2 or 3 will pack the same punch. While forgetting the cheap selling point for quest flew out if the window when they bump the price. And you if you were paying attention to the vr market you would know developers are struggling to run their games on quest.

If you you want to know how rubbish quest 2 is. The walking on psvr 1 looks miles better than quest 2. Psvr 1 suffer due to lack of controls support. Quest had advantage due to its standard controls.

But anyway I'm not going to drag this conversation any further because we know you will disappear in 2 weeks when the all face offs start to come out

Nice dodge to me calling out that you didn't actually read my post or my history when I mentioned those threads you clearly skipped, so you can pretend I have the PSVR2. Also act like it's the only VR headset I talked about too.

Acting like quest 2 or 3 will pack the same punch.

Which I never said.

While forgetting the cheap selling point for quest flew out if the window when they bump the price.

The cheapest most accessible headset that's still the cheapest most accessible headset stopped being the cheapest most accessible headset because they bumped the price $50? Are you reading what you're saying?

And you if you were paying attention to the vr market you would know developers are struggling to run their games on quest.

I never even brought up developers in relation to the Quest, so not sure what you're going on about here.

If you you want to know how rubbish quest 2 is.

I never said the Quest wasn't underpowered. You seem to be creating your own storyline here about things I never said

But anyway I'm not going to drag this conversation any further because we know you will disappear in 2 weeks when the all face offs start to come out

Or if you actually read my posts and threads, which you didn't, you would see half of what you're accusing me of saying...I never actually said.

You mean like horizon, re8 and gt7, the walking dead? Soon firewall and behemoth? You mean those games?

I'm talking about games originally made for VR in mind... not games (previously released) made for controllers in mind, then decided to implement VR as an afterthought to make a few extra bucks.

So anything outside of AAA-ish games that only exist for vr platforms, AND do not include ones for psvr count. Sounds like a load of shit.

How many are games as opposed to "experiences"?

How many console games are games as opposed to experiences? Do you have the samme criteria for what makes and experience?

Would you purchase a console if it didn't have AAA exclusives?... indie exclusives are enough to purchase a console?
