Sony SDM-HS95P might just be the best reasonably priced PC monitor there is.

(By reasonably priced I mean less than $1000)

Being so incredibly picky about my displays, I stuck with a 17" flat screen CRT for all these years while people around me were happily switching to slim LCDs. None of those monitors ever appealed to me, and in fact the picture on my chunky CRT simply looked better than any of them. The only LCD I would ever consider buying was Apple's cinema display, but as far as I know it doesn't work with the PC, and is still has too much of that LCD-ish artificial look for my taste.

Well, my CRT days are finally over, and SDM-HS95P ended them. I guess it sounds really arrogant if I put it that way, but just my willingness to abandon the CRT and switch over to it speaks volumes about it's quality. But trust me, I was that much of a staunch opposer to LCD monitors.

So why this monitor and not any other before it, you ask, and why am I willling to put up with a hefty price of $600US? (actually after I paid for it, store clerk told me that I'm in luck and that there is $80 rebate for it - nice sales strategy idiot...)

Simply because it's picture quality is unrivaled. It's almost completely missing any of the typical LCD flaws that annoyed me so much (ghosting, uneven brightness distribution, poor black color), and it's color quality and sharpness destroys my CRT that I was so proud of. The best thing about it though - it lacks that damn artificial LCD look! The combination of high brightness, contrast, color and whatever lamination is used on the screen does an incredible job of emulating that natural look of CRT monitor, and there actually is no glass or plastic over the screen. The soft screen surface is simillar to touch to that of other LCDs, but it just *looks* like something glassy. I guess I don't know how to best describe this. PSP actually has very simillar natural look to it's screen, but it's even better with this monitor. I think HS94P had simillar type of screen actually, but again this one does look markedly better. It's like they tried to get it right with 94P but actually nailed it with 95P. Also, that P in the name seems to make all the difference. I had a chance to see the SDM-HS75, and it was like a night and day difference!

So what does GAF say - does anyone here have/has seen/used this monitor and what do you think about it?

It's at my work...yeah the response time is amazing and I think that it looks great aesthetically. If you can afford it, go for it.

It's time for me to buy a new monitor as well...I was going to get a PSP, but I think I need this first. I'm going with a ViewSonic or Samsung just because of my budget.

I've been highly against LCD monitors myself, still am a bit, but I've been enjoying my ViewSonic VP171b and actually considered getting another one. It doesn't seem to have any of the problems you've listed as issues you've had with LCDs in the past and it does one thing that it seems like a lot of LCD monitors don't allow you to do; it's quite adjustable. It seems like, including the one you have, most LCD monitors don't give you much in adjusting the position of it. I have a dual monitor display and it's nice to be able to raise the height of the monitor by the stand without stacking it on top of something so that it matches the same level as my CRT. On top of that, it will let me rotate the screen for usage with documents or other things that would benefit from it like a vertical scrolling shooter =) Another nice thing about it is it has three inputs, two analog, and one for DVI of which I can select which input I want to use. Awesome monitor and it looks good physically too.

Marty, I can tell you that still to this day every LCD monitor has those problems (yes, even my beloved 95P :p, but to a lower degree than any other I've seen at least). It's just that for the first time I feel they are insignificant enough, and it even outperforms CRTs in some things I'd never thought it would (like the vividness of colors) The picture really looks so damn good that it makes me happy when I sit in front of it :')

As far as the adjustability goes, the only thing you can adjust on it is the tilt back and forth (which is realized through an unusual roll/spring system which is very novel and neat to touch/move) It's light enough that you can rotate the whole thing left and right really easily with one hand though.

Btw, I'm even using 95P with a plain old analog VGA cable, and it still looks great. I've seen it with DVI in store, and now can't wait to upgrade my crappy PC so that I can get that extra bit of DVI picture quality.

Nice monitor; I was thinking of picking one of these up this summer after seeing XBrite, which looks quite amazing.

Has anyone had experiences with LCD monitor/TV hybrids? They're releasing one in a few days which looks quite promising.

I've seen this one in the same store, the same day I got HS95P. It's widescreen, it's nice looking, but it just doesn't have the same picture quality as HS95, just as nothing else in the store did :p
