Soo...Tobal No. 1 has aged badly

The visuals are still pretty nice and solid, but damn does the gameplay feel too slow and clunkish. I still like the characters though.

Now I'm playing Suikoden 1 and can look past its dated visuals. The menu stuff is kind of annoying though...constant playing around with items. Ah well, the characters rock, and the music is amaaaaaaazing!

Tobal No.1 is very DBZish in design.

Big guy with cape before you fight Udan = Buu
Emperor Udan = Supreme Kai
Gen = Well... Trunks?

edit: I only found out recently that DBZ guy worked on it, like some of the DQ games.

2D always ages better than 3D, that's for sure. Yeah, Suikoden is awesome.

Tobal 2 still looks pretty good, IMO. Haven't played Tobal 1 in ages, but I remember it looked pretty blocky and basic, even when it was new.

Tobal games are meant to look blocky though because it runs in 60 FPS (at least Tobal 2 does but I think Tobal 1 does as well).

Tobal 2 is probably the best looking PS1 game I've ever seen. It's sad that it never made it to the US... :(

Tobal 2 still looks pretty good though. It still PLAYS better than tons of games that succeeded it. What I wouldn't give to get that particular Dream Factory team back working on a next gen system.

And Gren rules.

I'd love to see a new Tobal on the next gen systems. *drool*

Come get some!

The one thing I love about Tobal 2 is one feature they have in their practice mode. The feature basically allows you to slow the speed of the game up by varying degrees so you can count frames. Seeing a move 1 frame at a time rocks.

i actually prefered tobal 1 to 2 by quite a large margin... i'd like to go back to both though and see if i'd feel the same

Akira Toriyama has actually done all of the Dragon Quest games. Well, considering all the spinoff titles by this point I'm not sure he directly worked on them all, but they've at least stayed with his style.

All, actually. If I'm not mistaken, the original 3 guys behind DQ all still have their parts on each game.

yeah i really enjoyed tobal 2. really really really greatly really. I wish there were more action/rpg/fighting games like the rpg mode in tobal 2. Does anyone know of anygames like this? I know many fighting game purists would scoff at the idea of 200 character fighters, but man tobal 2 was really really fun. Sony/square really ought to port it now; or make something similar. Or howabout screwing the final fantasy vii remake that they aren't not making and making a tobal remake?
