Okay, kids, seeing as yer all car pros around here: what's the best small-to-midsize pickup truck I can get for up to $20K?

No Lightnings or other ricetrucks. No monster trucks. No silly ubercab soccer mom pseudotrucks. Just PURE small-to-midsize MAN TRUCK for HAULIN SHIT.

Edit: also no Dodges. I'm leanin' towards a used recent-year Toyota Tacoma 4X.

Toyota just released a new Tacoma, Nissan is just coming out with a new Frontier, and Dodge is coing out with a new Dakota as well. These should all already be on the showroom floor, although the Nissan will be in limited quantities for now. SO... you can either go for one of those new models, or get a great deal on leftover '04s, which are all still highly decent trucklets.

Avoid Ford's Ranger or Mazda's B series (same thing), unless you're interested in getting a high-end, but highly dated truck with monster incentives on it.

Chevrolet's Colorado and GMC's Canyon are high quality machines, but no V-6 is available. The biggest engine is a 2.8L (IIRC) five-cylinder. If you see an S-10 or Sonoma, avoid them like the plague.

Good advice. I'd prefer a V6. I like the look of the 04 Frontiers -- how's the quality? I've heard Nissan has been skimping on quality a bit lately.

Perfectly solid, it dates from before Le Cost Killer. If I was in the market, I would see Nissan and Toyota on about equal ground, except Nissan will have more incentives at the cost of lower resale value.

Well, you made that easy, then -- I dig the look/price of the Frontiers. Guess I'll take a look at an 04 next week. Thanks, sir!

Actually, since I have nothing better to do, what kind of equipment do you want on it? I'll help you price it out...

midsize?! crow, get yourself a f-150 4x4 quad cab. it rox, seriously. my friend has one and, besides being beautiful, it also rides like a car. i dig dodge's version more, though...

I swear to god Drinky, if you buy some behemoth of a vehicle and dont actually use its hauling capacity to its fullest I will punch you into a coma

Even the four-door Frontier is fairly small, although any pickup will get lousy gas mileage without a bed cover or camper shell to improve aerodynamics...

I live in Seattle, city of narrow one-way streets, and my place du emploi has parking spaces the size of postage stamps. A large truck would be a big pain.

I need a truck for Molbaks/Lowe's/IKEA runs and friends who can't stop moving. It also had to double as a commuter ride in the stop-go hell of the 405. Definitely getting a bedliner and cover.

Get a Dakota with their smallish 4.7 V8. Trucks without V8s aren't trucks at all!
