Speculation - US Advent Children Blu-Ray-Only Release

I haven't heard this anywhere, I just made this up. However, unlike some of the other stuff everyone here makes up, I think I have some solid reasoning for this. Hear me out.

Ever since the supposed "simultaneous" Japanese/North American DVD release of Advent Children, Square suddenly went all quiet on us and haven't said a thing since then about it coming over here. Even before that, the dual UMD/DVD release turned into a DVD only release, and now we have neither at the moment.

What's the deal? Well, I believe Sony and Square are holding back the movie for a massive launch event to coincide with the PlayStation 3 launch, whenever that turns out to be. Not only that, Sony will have Advent Children available on Blu-ray exclusively for a significant period of time.

Advent Children is still something a lot of people want, including those who have already seen the Japanese version. The PlayStation 3 is also something a lot of people want (including those who haven't seen anything about it, natch). Both groups are pretty much one in the same. Making the movie available only on BR would virtually guarantee that early PS3 adopters would pick up a BR movie (Advent Children) as well as the launch PS3 games, giving Sony good numbers to spin to aid in the media format's fight against HD-DVD.

If it were released on DVD along side it, not everyone would fly for getting the more expensive Blu-ray version. Not giving people the option would be favorable for Sony. Of course, the movie would be released on DVD (and UMD, I would assume) eventually, probably after a few months of PS3 availablity.

It's no secret that the PS3 is the key for Sony to get Blu-ray to beat HD-DVD. Sony will likely shoehorn Blue-ray through gamers to get the general public, and what better way for them to do that then release a guaranteed-to-sell Blu-ray movie on day one?

Plausible? Foolish? Brilliant? Stupid? I dunno, you tell me.
 
Actually the movie is going to come preloaded on the FFVII remake game and in order to watch the movie you have to clear the game and then watch this big 2 hour CG ending.
 
beyond all the dickhead comments following the original post, I think this could be a reasonable situation. Advent Children is a visually stunning film, even on regular DVD, so beefing it up in HD for Blu-ray would be a great showcase of this 'next level' of DVDs.
It's also absolutely ridiculous that this film has not made it's way to the US/Europe yet beyond imports, so something must be up?

I just wish Square would at least make an announcement.
 
I don't see why it would happen. Would it push the tech into more homes? No. The movie has a too limited appeal. Would it help the movies sales? No. Too limited user base (aka 0). Sounds like a great plan! Right up SE's alley.

DVD Industry is based on the double dip.

They'll release it on DVD, everyone who wants it gets it, rerelease on BRD, everyone with high end stuff'll get it again. Tada.
 
I think it's a sound idea and they'd be stupid not to do it if the numbers work out, FF7:AC was expensive to make. You'd think Square would want to recoup those costs. It would be an amazing showcase for Blu Ray and PS3 though, imagine if you could look at certain scenes in realtime using the power of the PS3 like those MGS2 vids. He's not saying it would be exclusive, he's saying it would be timed exclusive.

I dunno there's so many ways they could bundle and tie that movie though. With a FF7 PS3 remake, the UMD with Crisis Core, etc. I'm sure they'll leverage it somehow.
 
Well, I hadn't considered it possible for Advent Children to potentially interest less viewers, but you've thought up just the scenario!

Actually, that'd be insanely cool. Packaged with PS3, a hybrid BRD. The full CG movie, and then an extras section that has some small scene segments, real time rendered (as well as possible), which you could manipulate in real time.

*sigh*
 
Well it's just Advent Children appeals only to FF7 fans and some bandwagon anime folks. Throw it in with a remake so people who never experienced the game get more context. Or maybe they do a directors cut of the game and add in that content in somewhat playble form, throw in some new weapons and shit. It's like they've been dancing around this remake forever and they're gonna make the announcements about the FF7 compilation there. Square it's gonna leverage everything together, it's just a question of how and that may be very telling of how much they're still in bed with Sony or if they're spreading the love around. I just think it's might be more profitable to price gouge everyone with an exclusive HD version, or a collectors edition game cause the people who want it will buy it anyways and then everyone else gets it later.

The direct point wouldn't be to push the tech into more homes or even help movie sales. The reason for it would be to get all the FF7 fanboys to get the BRD version of the movie when they buy the PS3, and then Sony can tout high Blu-ray movie sales after the PS3 launch. They wouldn't say of which movie, but they can still make a good argument about why Blu-ray is superior.

It's all about launch day spin.

I would think it would make more sense to release the movie on BRD first, as this is a special case for a major one-time event. Put out a regular Blu-ray edition first, then later come back with special DVD and BRD versions of the movie. The goal for Sony would be for as many people to buy Blu-ray movies as possible after the PS3 launches.
 
For a split second I read the title as "US Advent Rising Blu-Ray-Only Release." Which probably actually makes more sense than the first post.

I think switching the BR-DVD releases the other way around, sounds like a more practical and profitable scenario. I also think Square-Enix would have some say sort of final say in the possibility of a format exclusive.

If they wanted to make money they would have released the fucking thing on DVD already it's been out long enough. Then they could even double dip by catching the first wave of Blu Ray, it's obvious S-E didn't forget about it, but I think everyone else is cause they're taking so fucking long.

Bingo. I also think selling a million DVDs in Japan, while quite a milestone, isn't even putting a dent into the sum of money Square spent on making the movie.

I don't think money was ever an issue with Advent Children.

If it was you'd think they would have been on the ball with that release instead of losing sales cause people watched the fansub and figured out how mediocre of a movie it was.

Advent Children sold very well in Japan, I wouldn'tbe surprised if they already turned profit on it. Something they probably never did with TSW which was a huge mistake.

This may come to a surprise to you, but there are a lot of people who refuse to watch the movie until it comes out with a proper US release.

Yes, just about everyone has seen the movie already. But no one has seen it in uber-high-definition. All the more reason for Sony to put it out on Blu-ray first.

I think SE missed the boat - the huge delay was daft. Unless they are keeping it back to help hype Dirge .... ... .. . ... --- ...
 
There you go, there's the missing piece of the puzzle. They can totally push Dirge with the DVD in some uber expensive Collectors Edition.
 
I would say the ads in just about every game and anime magazine I pick up lately with a huge spread of Advent Children coming soon and showing the DVD and UMD cases would disagree with the topic.

Unless they don't like money, throw the ad money they spent away, piss off every consumer with false advertising, hold out for a whole year and then only market the movie to a very small percentage of consumers they otherwise could be reaching.

I imagine theres already a good deal of sales lost due to it already been easy to find on the net, and too shit to justify purchasing. If it were another movie release it wouldnt be so substantial, but considering its potential purchasers are generally people who pretty much need to be a reasonably heavy internet user to even know of its existance in the first place, i'd say, and hope, they did do something heavily stupid with this large delay.

Having said that, a HD release of AC is something that i would actually want to see, not pay money for though.
