Speeding ticket cost in CA

I just got pulled over for doing 92 mph on freeway.
How much does a speeding ticket cost in California?

I was caught in Orange County and stupid me did not realize my address on Driver's Licsense was of my parent's which is up in Pasadena. And I stupidily gave officer my current address at West Minster and looking at the ticket I realize the officer was from Cypress which is only 10 miles from where the court is at.

Next time you need to go faster.

Also, that part of Orange County is famous for no-show cops, so you could contest it and hope the officer doesn't show - then the ticket is automatically invalidated.

And I think you can do online driving school to avoid the points, so you can consider that.

MODS, sorry for posting on wrong section.

If I do go to court and the cop decides to show up, what's the maximum fine I"m lookin at?
CAn i still goto traffic school afterwards and remove points after I'm found guilty?

It's a gamble. If the cop shows, the judge ALWAYS sides with the cop - you have to pay the fine AND you can't go to traffic school.

PS., no 60fps, no sale.

If he ticketed you going 92, you may be pretty screwed as anything +20 over the speed limit is regarded as reckless driving so you may be fined (heavily) and lose your license. I was ticketed going 80 in a 65 and the ticket was a little over $250.

I was in Palm Springs all last week... drove up and down Route 10.... parts of that have a speed limit of 70... didn't matter though because people were blazing on ALL parts of 10.... with everything.. bikes, cars, trucks, etc...

I got a ticket for 90 in a 55 in NJ. I think I ended up paying $250 after the DA dropped it to 75 in a 55. Still not cool at all.

EDIT: ^^ so which part was uncool?

the big question to me is why the hell were you going that fast anyway?

Oh wait, you said California. Never mind as you're all insane drivers down there. I travelled through a few months ago and average speed of traffic was 80-85 and I was still getting passed like I was standing still. morons.

Yeah I got pulled over in AZ for doing 85 on the 202. EVERYONE does 85 on the 202! However I was easy to spot since I was travelling from east mesa which is the quiet end of the 202.

I didnt have time for traffic school but did pay the fine :(

Haha.

Don't forget the insurance costs if it does go on your record. I got my 90 in a 65 (cop took it down to a speeding 20+)while back and my insurance went up about $50 per month.

depends on what he wrote the ticket for. most cops wont write 92 on the ticket if you seem like you have a head on your shoulders. they'll write something like 80+ so you can keep your liscence and still pay a 200+ ticket. if he wrote 90 on the ticket though you may be screwed.

edit. yeah cory is right. 80+ 20+ something like that. the cop knows wether he wants you impounded or not. hahahahaha. if he didnt take your car you should be fine. DO TRAFFIC SCHOOL so it doesnt show up on your record and your insurance remains decent.

Contest the ticket by mail first. The officer will have to reply with his side of the story on paper so it's paper work for him to do so. Now the bonus is, if you lose this, you can still request to contest the ticket in person, so you get two chances out of this instead of just one. Google about contesting tickets by mail for more information. There are a lot of sites dedicated to this.

Stinkles: Why should he contest it? He knows he did the crime. And no, people don't drive 92 all over Socal. Try the 405 near LAX.

Well, specifically because if he doesn't at least get it knocked down to 80, his insurance is going to go waaaaaay up.

Morally, because speeding is not the same as burglary. Don't get me wrong, he should take this as a lesson to stop speeding, but it's a bureaucratic crime right up until he actually crashes or hits someone. Contesting the ticket isn't even abusing the system, it's built into the process.

Oh and if he wrote "ND" on the ticket, that means he hates you.

He wasn't going 70. It was frickin' 92 mph. It's really hard to change lanes when someone is speeding in the other lane. Here I am, going 67 and trying to change lanes, and some twat decides to tailgate and honk at me simply because he wants me to speed up. That and the people who decide to cut in front of me because I'm not speeding enough. *blood boils*

And a crime is crime. If he truthfully thinks he's right, then perhaps there is some way it can go up to the Supreme Court. If he's going to plead guilty when he knows he's not, then isn't that a lie? To get out of something not so morally objectionable, one tells a lie. And no, this is no white lie.

107 kmph and trying to change lanes on a highway? WTF :lol. Which lane were you in/trying to change into?

The speed limit here is 104.6 km/hr--it doesn't matter what lane I'm changing to. The other driver was way behind me. Once I'm in the lane, it's like wtf, they are right behind me. I don't know about Canadian speed limits, but I remember seeing a 100 kmph speed limit sign.

bune duggy: The 5 in that area can be pretty scary. All those big rigs drive fast, and sometimes the fog comes down.

Well the inside lane is generally for faster moving vehicles (the speed limit is 100 km/h but most move at 110-120 km/h). Just wondering if you were trying to move into or out of the inside lane (as if it were out of the inside lane and the guy was moving faster than you, he's a dick).

You're essentially "allowed":
10 km/h over the speed limit on normal roads.
5 km/h over the speed limit in a school zone.
15 km/h-20km/h over the speed limit on the highway.

At least, that's what I feel safe doing.

A lot of drivers are idiots. Apparently a lot of them have been taught that the little blinking light on your car that points into their lane means "speed up now."

I like to have a nice gap to change into whenever possible, so the guy I shift in front of isn't too close behind, but a lot of people close it up for whatever reason.

EDIT: Added quote, and I think "freeway" speeds range from 80-100 km/h here (depends on the city, 100 here). 110 on larger, real highways.

If the cop shows up, ask for a continuance (aka reschedule). Don't expect this strategy to work more than twice. If he's there the third time, ask to speak with the prosecutor and make some sort of deal. I was able to get a 70 in a 35 down to a simple "Failure to Obey Traffic Device" violation a couple of days ago (here in NYC).

Exactly. It would be better if people took into account traffic all around them. In the situation you mentioned I'll do whatever I can so as to not impede traffic. In some cases it is better to just speed up and let the guy in behind you.

It was 6 AM on Sunday and hardly any traffic.

He did write 92 on the ticket
Speed Approx. 92
PF/Max Sped. 65
Vehi. Limit 65
State 65

He didn't check any of the boxes for 'Radar', 'Laser', 'Cont. Form Issued'

That's why I like a car with a little passing power. Inconsiderate idiots rarely beat me to a particular spot on the road. I love the satisfaction of slipping into a lane as the car just behind tries to close up the spot :D

Are you the type changes into the passing lane then starts to match the speed of the slower lanes if so you truly are worst type of blockhead. I can understand if you need to pass 1/2 cars but to coast or stay in the passing lane is retarded. You want to coast or just drive leisurely stay in the slower lanes. Maybe thats why some idiot is honking thier horn at you.

Start saving your money dude. Anything 20mph over the speed limit will cost you an arm and aleg, not to mention a possible suspension of your license.
You'll most likely have to go to court on this one. If so, plead no contest and you'll get off with a slightly less severe fine.

Do not challenge this in court. I fyou lose, you'll most definitely be in some shit.

he paced you at 92? sounds like you're going to have to go to court. i'm not sure that you're at reckless yet (i think that autos at 95, and it would be on the ticket), but i'm pretty sure you can't do traffic school. if it's a first offense you might have some luck in court...

here's a copy of paynofine, the ticket bible: http://www.sadgamer.com/~milkmandan/PayNoFine.pdf

there are a couple things that gets wrong though, the biggest being that the fine should not be your point of contention. first and foremost you want to make sure that you don't get any points on your license, and the ticket is not reported to insurance.

the other thing you're going to want to look into is a lawyer. chances are, for the cost of a lawyer and whatever he/she can get the fine reduced to, you can get off without points/insurance hike. this is almost guaranteed. REMEMBER: traffic citations are primarily a revenue generation mechanism.

Talk around and see if anybody knows traffic lawyers. The system in Texas is corrupt as hell. I got nailed going 10 over, and I couldn't do defensive driving to get it removed. So I talked to my dad who got me a lawyer, I paid him a hundred bucks, got to court at 8 AM, stayed there until about 2 (wooden benches hurt like a bitch after a while), and got it dismissed with cop and everything.

Just a giant money making scheme, it was ridiculus. People with more serious charges were able to plea bargain with the DA to get reduced sentences as to not have it show up on their record or something.

The entire experience was kind of stupid but eye opening, and my lawyer worked the hell out of the traffic court.

^^I would like to note that I didn't mention any of this, just to make this clear.

Anyways, I tend to drive around 65-68, and that is pretty much the speed limit. The people who tailgate or honk? They think that I'm not breaking the law egregiously enough. I'd rather not waste my money on a ticket, thank you. If I'm not in a hurry, then I will drive 50-60, but that's in the slow lane. People will STILL tailgate or change lanes and cut in front of me... wtf don't they know what the word "limit" means?

That sir, would be considered reckless indangerment.

Well of course, sometimes it drops to a standstill because of the horrible traffic. They'll get going up to 92 as soon as they possibly can though.

got a 92 in 65 (was actually a bit faster) at the grapevine a long time ago... ticket was $271 + traffic school fees

On paper, it's a limit. In reality, it's more of a guideline. I go as fast as the traffic around me; if that's above the "limit," so be it.

I try to be very conscious of the drivers around me. If they're going faster than me, I'll change lanes to move out of their way (if they're behind me). If I'm passing on the highway and there's people behind me, I pass as quickly as possible and move immediately to the slow lane once again to let them pass me.

Don't piss people off on the road, it's just really annoying.

Some anecdotal evidence: I know some people who complain about "slow" drivers, and I assume that tailgaters have the same mindset. It's like if some other driver isn't breaking the speed limit on the highway, they label that driver as "slow". Then that driver becomes a target for derision. I have less of a problem with people speeding 3 lanes away from me than someone who thinks law-abiders should be tailgated, mocked, honked at, or lights flashed on.

And oh, tailgaters suck. Slow down for them and/or line your car up with another so they can't pass.
