Splatoon 3 is releasing on 09/09/2022

Splatoon 2 sold over 12 fucking million. Gonna be interesting to see if this comes close to that.
Well it was a different time when Splatoon 2 came out, and you didn't have to PAY to play online(despite Splatoon 2 using P2P networking which is MINIMAL load on Nintendo's part).

Right now September 2022 is looking pretty barren, but June release date announcements might change that quickly.

Didn't nintendo update their backend system for internet servers or something like that? noob question

I'd hope Splatoon 3 uses that system

You guys are hilarious, there's no getting through to you.

Why exactly?
Theyre both not large changes from the previous ones. And any numerical sequel typically leaves some behind on each subsequent entry. And they're coming out much, much later in the system life cycle. Just normal stuff for almost any series with direct sequels.

Well, I'm super hyped for this, it's going to be my first splatoon game. I figured there's no point getting 2 at this stage. I wonder when overwatch 2 will be out, since the beta is this month, I'm assuming a fall release?

I think it's traditionally come out in summer (May/July) for part 1 and 2. Maybe Splatoon 3 just needed a few more months this time? Interesting; I think you're right about the swap.
Yea, Splatoon was usually summer and Xenoblade Choronicles 2/Torna released were Dec/Sept. Xenoblade 3 was initially holiday!

Damn, was hoping to jump on in this summer like they initially announced , as this is my most anticipated game this year, but I can wait another few months. Guess it works out though, since Xenoblade 3 got pushed up to July, I should have plenty of time to finish it before this releases. Once September rolls around, my switch will likely be a Splatoon machine for the foreseeable future lol.

Some of the mobility in that video is nuts. That grappling hook is crazy man. Looks like a new sub weapon for melee classes. Some of the fastest and most varied shooter gameplay in existence between all the stealth, platforming, grappling hooks, rail grinding, super jumps.

Loved that Ghost in the Shell style spider tank too.

Yeah the grapple thing is pretty cool, rollers and brushes have a crazy good tool to close distances really easily. Have they said what the odd "spin dash" like jump is before? It caught my eye in that video, but I don't recall seeing it before hand. It happens at the 2:45 mark of the video. Wonder if that is just a movement tool everyone gets now? I dig it nonetheless. Btw, I also love the Tachikoma special as well lol.

I haven't heard any details honestly, so it was all new to me today. Someone else might know more about it though. Some of the new specials look sick. I also loved that one with the drones that surround you, then all shoot lasers I think.

I'd expect Splatoon 3 and Xenoblade 3 to sell less than their predecessors. But you never know?

I think XC 3 has a shot to take the crown as best selling in the franchise. XC 2 went out of print way too quickly and Nintendo has been stingy with the digital price.

Splatoon 2 was a beast. Hard to see Splatoon 3 putting up those numbers again unless the Switch 2 is further away than most of us assume.

Splatoon 3 is looking like a day 1 purchase to me.

Gamers complain about Nintendo's poor shooters, splatoon looks cute and shows a hint of greatness, definitely a risky game to make.

I loved the first one.

I think I played it too much though, as I've barely touched 2. The controls didn't help (imho, the GamePad was a much better controller for it).

I think I'll be back for this though.

I just looked at this and it looks like Nintendo is releasing the same game a third time.

This sounds like a DLC or even a balance patch.
The games have substantial single player campaigns and the comment you replied to was only mentioning a few of the changes (that they thought major). You do know that core gameplay of any franchise doesn't change that much? It's largely what defines most.

So how is this different to COD? We're not bitching about that not are we?

COD and other games do it, the fans have enough sense to scream bloody murder and not buy the games.

Nintendo does it and you get all these apologists coming out of the woodworks.

That's not inflammatory, this is pure objective observation.

I'm wondering how many maps they'll put in this one, and how many will actually be new. I have very little hopes.
Thank you for the laugh.

For sure! And i really appreciate the consistancy of releases. Most of their big franchises are one per console, but i like that they continue to iterate on these games in a relatively short amount of time
Hopefully they will bring us some dormant classics too like Earthbound, Golden Sun. Id love to see a 3D Donkey Kong too

Yes it's what I talked about it's called the squid roll. It's one of the two new movement mechanics introduced in Splat 3, the other one is squid surge. It's not clear how they work exactly but squid roll looks like a short jump you can use to instantly cancel your momentum and turn in the opposite direction while squid surge is a superjump type of move off a ledge. Apparently some competitive players also analyzed the footage in the salmon run trailer and realized that the squid roll move had some amount of super armor so it might be able to tank a few enemy shots when used.

They talk about the moves here:

COD is one of the most criticized franchises in the industry for churning out the same product yearly. Are we creating our own realities now just to justify this looking like the same thing from the last two games?

Good thing that Splatoon doesn't release yearly.

Are you going to list the games that supposedly add core movement mechanics for free btw or are you're just here for passive aggressive shitposts?

Not to mention multiplayer games (which is what this game is) that significantly overhaul systems and mechanics through seasons and whatnot

Pixel indie games really? And no multiplayer games comparable to Splatoon don't add new movement tech with mere balance patches that's fucking nonsense. Titanfall didn't add the grappling hook with a free update in the first game, Overwatch, Fortnite, Destiny etc haven't fundamentally changed their basic movement with patches either.

Shame on Nintendo for bullshotting in 2022 the game DOES NOT look that good as evidenced in the video they posted today.

It's also one of the most praised, you just shut that out. And each year they have a new single player campaign and add new or change mechanics to gameplay. If you want a go at cash grabs, then sports games are where you should look.

And Splatoon wasn't release yearly anyway.

I suspect you've never even played Splatoon as you didn't even bother addressing the points that were more new game mechanics shown. That and it clearly didn't suit your narrative of 'Nintendo pumping out rehashes'.

I really love the franchise. When I played it in 2015 I thought that I didn't have so much fun with a shooter since CS 1.6. And it was thanks to the gyro, otherwise I wouldn't have played it at all.

On the switch the gyro got a noticeable increase in latency, but it was manageable.

Now, the p2p... Hummm. After the wii u I promised to myself I wouldn't play Splatoon and Mario Kart online again until they added dedicated servers, but I was weak and ended up buying both LMAO

But this time I really have learned my lesson. It's a shame tho...

Loved the gyro on the Wii U.

Reckon it was because they used modified WiFi instead of Bluetooth?

Played the first on wii u, played the second for prob close to 2000 hrs , but stopped playing over two years ago, splatoon 2 is coming upto 5yrs old now, they should have had 3 ready 2-3 yrs after the second game. If nintendo had brought out a switch 2 or pro with updated graphics and this game took advantage then prob dip, but nothing shown yet is making me want to hunt out switch from boxed up in attic to play

Awesome, thanks the for the heads up! Guess I missed that tweet a while back lol, not that I follow all the tweets on this, but I try to check out any new video they put out. That roll giving armor is interesting though, wonder what the cool down with that is, also wonder how that interacts with dualie rolls. The wall climb thing sounds awesome actually! Been a lot of times when I have climbed up the wall and either the camera rotates on you, or you hit a splotch if opposing ink and it fucks everything thing up.

Really excited for this. Kind of tired of BR games, and want another good shooter. I love my time with the first game on WiiU. I loved the sense of community and hanging out drawing with strangers lol. Kind of predated the artist streaming that's been going on for a few years, but maybe I just didn't notice it back then. I also rarely watch live-streams save for some podcasts and shows. Some people were freakin' talented!

For whatever reason I never got fully into Splatoon 2, but I got the Octo expansion. I'm going to have to boot this game back up and play through the story. I do wish the Switch had a better/easier party system for friends though. My buddies and I usually just party up and chat through Xbox or PS during Switch sessions lol.
