Spong : All Xbox2 games HTDV compatible

The Inside Track
I know it's Spong, but it seems legit enough :
Speaking at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates confirmed that all Xbox 2/Xenon games will support HDTV.

Speaking to Japanese paper Yomiuri Shimbun, Gates said that, “Current planning should mean we will be able to offer HDTV support across 100% of the [Xbox 2] software range. We expect to be unique in this offering.”

I was expecting all Xbox 2 games to support 720p (that's why there is 10 MB of EDRAM) anyway, but it's still interesting. I guess 2005 will see my good old Sony Wega 100hz finally replaced after 6 years of heavy usage :)

sony wega triniton 32 100hz? That's the one I had for years now. It has worked great, but I will upgrade my tv if I can afford it.

Yeah, the more or less cult KV32FX60. Such an incredible TV set 6 years ago.

yeah, i'm pretty much set on upgrading to HDTV once the new consoles come out. Here's to hoping they support HDMI/DVI.

Well considering that MS already considers most Xbox games HDTV compatible due to 480p, Xbox2 would technically have to take a step backward to be anything other than HDTV compatible in MS's eyes. Not that I doubt the likelihood of significant 720p/1080i support, but MS's own package labeling doesn't give them much of a hurdle to leap to get to "HDTV compatability"

Uh...I'm pretty sure PS3 and even the Revolution will support HDTV in all software as well, Billy boy.

Isn't that the case right now with 90% of all Xbox games?
I guess that by HDTV they mean at least 720p. Few Xbox support anything more than 480p. But they should all support 480p (there are exceptions)

all Xenon games should support 720p and 1080i as well as run at 480p and 480i for non HD sets.

but also, all Xenon games should have 8x AA all the time.

There is even more evidence that all Xbox 2 games will be 720p (official even). I don't see how it's interesting though, we in Europe don't even have HDTV, so it could possible only look like less jaggy picture on our tv's (like AA). It wont get sharper for us.

Plus: I think it's so useless, just render the game at high res and sample it down for non HDTV's (still eliminating the jaggies becuase the actual rendered image is higher res scaled down in size). Don't render it at low res for non HDTV's that just doesnt make sense and is a waste of power.

A lot of the newest tv sets (plasma or LCD) available here in France support 720p. 720p / 1080i CRT TVs are still almost impossible to find, but I hope to find a Sony one before the end of 2005.

I think it will be the other way around, at least here in America most HDTV have 1080i over 720p. So i think 1080i will be the standard.

Yeah, the high end stuff does support it sometimes. But they are soooo expensive!!!!! I hope it gets more mainsteam soon. Love to have an HDTV! :)

I sat down to listen to the XBox division VP J Allard talk about this at E3 last year. He kept saying he wasn't going to discuss XBox 2, and then started talking about it. It's legit.. good to see nothing's changed.

720p is great and all, but they still need to apply some AA. I was playing Tony Hawk 4 on the Xbox the other day, and wow, the 720p looked awesome. Nice and sharp (well, it's twice the resolution of 480p!) but damn, it still had the jaggies. Needs 4x AA at least.

I hope this is true, my purchase of a HDTV will really start to payoff then. I guess that they are talking 720p or higher since 480p is not really HD. Now I wonder if the next generation systems will support 16:9 or stick with 4:3 for their HD games.
