SSB experts -- how can a replay function be implemented unobtrusively?

I've never really been too much of a fan of the Super Smash Bros. games, but I got into Melee recently. Some of the stuff that can be pulled off is still really cool to me, such as grabbing or reflecting thrown items, mid-air interception attacks, etc.

A lot of times I wish there was an instant replay function so I can view impressive sequences of actions, but I don't want such a feature to be abused to the point of interruption of the gameplay flow, or to be triggered accidentally or (God forbid) automatically.

So how do you guys suggest a hypothetical replay function be implemented (of course, you're free to think that such a feature shouldn't be included, but that's not really what I'm asking)?

Quite simple -- allow replays after the match.

The concept of "instant replays" during a multiplayer fighting game is, well, stupid.

Allowing replays of the entire match is not.

Instant replay would kill the flow of the game.

I am in favor of a general match replay feature as seen in most driving sims lately.

When SSBM is paused it already gives you some limited camera movement. It would just be a matter of RAM and programming controls to give a decent user-controlled replay.

How about rather than just showing the winning character posing, it could show some of their best moves in the background?
