SSX (2012) @ E3: Mac Reveal Trailer

This game has actually gone from "OMFG WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY SSX YOU BASTARDS!" to "Yay, it's looking good, can't wait!".

I not-so-secretly hope the same thing happens with Syndicate.

This game looks awesome, I get a very SSX3 feel from it, which is awesome as that is my favorite SSX game.

Yeah anytime I even see something snowboarding I get Andy Hunter's 'Go' playing in my head. : )

Looks good! It's what we want! Taking fucking long enough though!

I wish I was still in marketing so that I could use this SSX spectacle as a showcase of the power of simple marketing shifts, and how easily an entire audience can be manipulated.

Either way, looks nice, but been there, done that. Show more avalanches, lethal runs and insane drops and I might give a shit.

So just to clarify, this is the same "Deadly Descent" game they showed last year? With the same Tom Clancy bullshit vibe? Meaning there's a chance that the "dark and gritty" can still be there?

It's still there. They're just not showing it off because we've stated we don't care about it.

And there we have it. Quick, call it SSX Black Ops or something witty!

Looks awesome so far, glad it's back to the SSX of old.

Awesome look for Mac (he was my second main), but bring back JP! Need to play as my metro Frenchman on the slopes, EA!

Encouraging, but I'm still very cautious about this.

I didn't enjoy SSX on tour at all, and Deadly Descent (which this still is, ultimately...) was awful looking.

Encouraging, though.

Congrats to EA for handling this.

You sound like you don't care very much about SSX, so I'm not surprised you sound so jaded about the marketing of the game; like we're all sheep being fooled. The fact of the matter is that the game hadn't largely been produced outside of the track stuff at the point the trailer came out, so to say they still intended to produce a brightly colored SSX game is impossible to verify.

It's far too easy for producers (and you) to say "We intended to do this all along, you know how the internet loves to bitch" to discount the 180-degrees they've taken not only in tone (which should be expected), but also very concrete things, including game modes and control schemes. These things are not "marketing" that are bandied about and changed at a moment's notice. They are solid, game-defining features that take time to revamp.

Do some research on the things Todd Batty talked about in the press that came out in December 2011 when that disastrous prelim trailer came out. You'll note a marked disdain for the old games, talking about how SSX needs complete overhaul including in the control scheme. This has changed from the top to the bottom.

Things that have changed that I can think of off the top of my head since the trailer came out:

  • Early on the character it was stated the rookie character "Jack" would be the only one used in the game, and the other characters would serve peripheral roles in the game. This appears to have changed.
  • Early control scheme was said to be based strictly around both analog sticks. This has been discarded, with it going back to the button design of the old games.
  • SSX Deadly Descents was said to be main game mode. It has now been relegated to one of 3 game modes, no longer the primary feature but just one among several, including racing, online, and showoff.

While I think anyone who says that the internet should "take complete credit" for the direction of the game is overstating it, it's not a stretch to say that had the trailer not come out when it did, if it was revealed at E3 2011 and then came out in January 2012, we might have ended up with a much different game than we are seeing now.

Are you sure it's going back to the 'normal' scheme? I haven't read anything on that... and my biggest fear right now is seeing the controls at the live demos... It just feels so natural to play SSX the way it's (almost) always been, I don't even think about what I have to do anymore. While a new control design would definitely help in adding a difficulty curve to the game, which is something I'm all for since it's one of the things that makes games enjoyable, to learn and get better, I still think I'd prefer the controls I'm used to... And have them pump up the AI and score thresholds.

Also I'm leaving the E3 schedule EA has planned that gondee so kindly had the time to organize in a nice post:
