Unless I'm mistaken, Famitsu Xbox has published the first review of Star Wars Republic Commando for Xbox. The game is scheduled to ship in Japan on February 17, two weeks ahead of North America.

The game got straight 8's for a total score of 32/40.

I translated the review:

Reviewer #1: The game’s difficulty is pretty high, but not enough to make you want to quit. Even for those not familiar with the Star Wars universe will find that the game’s aesthetics impressive. Republic Commando has nice graphics and sound, and players will soon adapt to the game’s atmosphere. And while some the in-game comrades’ chatter isn’t so important, it really helps sell the game’s fictional world.

Reviewer #2: The best thing about Republic Commando is how it blends shooting action and strategic gameplay. Players can make use of their troops in a variety of ways, some will even save your life from time to time. Players will meld with their unit by receiving advice and developing strategies which can get really intense. This is a game you can play over and over again.

Reviewer #3: There’s a lot of fun to be had directing and fighting side-by-side your three computer-controlled subordinates. Commands are issued at the push of the button and are really easy to do. I was happy to find that I couldn’t get lost in the big environments due to the advice the game gives. It was also really easy to play the game thanks to the full Japanese localization Republic Commando underwent.

Reviewer #4: You will find yourself helping out your teammates in a pinch and them giving you a hand as well. The fight gets pretty hectic as players push through enemy lines in this futuristic command-based FPS. The pacing is done very well as the player will enter a number of emergency situations, but there are quite a lot of progress saves which slow down the pacing a bit. With that said, it’s really enjoyable to explore this alternative world.

Is that new one with KUF:TC cover? If so, anything else interesting in the new issue?

Yeah, that's the issue.

Sadly, the Republic Commando review was pretty much the only thing worth noting. The editors of the mag do a great job given the lack of content, but this issue is particularly dry.

Couple more tidbits of info:

1) Itagaki basically confirms DOA: Code Cronus will be on Xbox 2. He also says the size of the Xbox 2 hardware doesn't matter.

2) There's a four page preview of SpikeOut. The game is due out in March.

3) Metal Wolf Chaos was the best selling Xbox game of last month, moving a whopping 5892 copies.

4) The other two reviewed games are King of the Fighters 2002 (26/40) and Metal Slug 4 (25/40).

That's funny.

Thanks for the information Ryan. Ho btw there is a phantom dust topic on the first page waiting for you right now :D

come now, if the PS3 was 4 times the size of the XBox 2 , you KNOW the Japanese would suddenly not give a shit.

It's all fucking bullshit.

Anyone else play the Star Wars Republic Commando demo? Pretty lame...

What was lame about it? Control was smooth, as were the visuals and framerate; squad interaction was lively and commands simple to use; and all the little touches like the wrist blade melee attack, visor wiper, being able to call a squadmate to revive you, etc... were all really well done. Should be a blast on Live.

Isn’t Metal Slug 4 coming in a collection with 5?

Not in Japan. Those SNK collections are only in the U.S./Europe(?).

You can use the Japanese release dates to gauge when the games will come out in the U.S. For example, the new date of June for the KOF 2002/2003 pack for Xbox is still unlikely, as KOF 2002 hasn't even come out yet (Feb. 22) and 2003 still has no announced release date. But that's SNK USA for ya!! :)
