Best Civ game for somebody who never plays strategy games?

Civilization V is, give or take, the most accessible entry in the series, as far as I've been told.

Spelunky is such a funny game to me. I can complete Super Meat Boy at a 100%, classic ZX Spectrum platformers are no challenge to me, Spelunker I've even seen all stages for, and Super Mario Bros 2 (aka Lost Levels) is my favourite game in the franchise, and yet I'm lucky to get just to the jungle with Spelunky on the Daily Challenge.

I know why of course, I want everything I can possibly collect no matter how foolish and ultimately deadly that choice turns out to be, but I can't help myself.

It's all about mitigating risk.
I played it carefully last night and managed to elude a ghost to go back and pick up a shotgun I left while I was carrying the damsel to the exit. I also managed to make the run an achievement run for killing 12+ shopkeepers in a single game. I ended up with almost 100k at the beginning of 3-1 with just about every item in the game, 72 bombs, and 10 ropes. Granted, I was in the zone, but it was partially due to mitigating my risks and playing smart.

Now when I got to the temple, I killed anubis out of a vendetta, was mad that I couldn't unlock the city of gold cause I had missed dying purposefully somewhere in the ice caves, and so i decided to kill everything I could with the scepter. Too late did I realize that the homing rings of purple death can immediately do a 180 and hit YOU. I died cause of my own stupidity.

As far as I know, and I was following BNW price closely (just bought couple of days ago), it hasn't been close to $5 yet.

I recall seeing it for around $8.xx back in the winter sales. Wasn't $5 though, which is where I want it to be before I pick it up for the sake of having it.

Games getting physical releases generally go gold about a month before release. Gold means the developer ships a finished product to be physically produced on discs for sale.
Dark Souls 2 should be going gold any day now.

That gives them about an extra month to work solely on polishing up the PC version. If that game goes gold at the start of March, then it can still be shipped at the end of the month.

This is probably why they can't nail down a PC release date. Entirely hinges on how much work they can get done and when the game actually goes gold.
