Story, Story, Story!

After watching a fairly disappointing showcase of gameplay trailers this morning, I can't help but feel that developers are focusing on surrounding some average playing games with story driven atmospheric presentation while do very little to elevate gameplay itself.

I get why they do it since it, it's a direct line into the attention of gamers and shows well. Unfortunately now that everyone is doing it, the effectiveness of it is diluted. Now when I see a trailer that leans into that I take it as a warning to avoid because I know that devs were focusing on an aspect of a game that is a distant second to me.

As games get more mainstream and infected by pop culture you can expect more of this and it will keep getting cringier. Don't get me wrong, I love a well directed cinematic experience as much as anyone but that kind of talent is few and far between and usually you're left with pure mediocrity in the vain of the modern AC games.
I mean that trailer music you saw today screamed Norse mythology didn't it? Yeah Ubisoft is pretty hip, they want us to know.

What? The story parts of games are usually very very weak........it's actually the opposite, we would be alot better off if story were better developed beyond lame Hollywood narrative

Without saying something that will get me banned people have been saying this for awhile its that almost 80% of the people who try to sweep it under the rug will discredit you in on way or another. This has been a problem for awhile since 2013 at the earliest a over infences on story then game play.

2013?

This has been going on since around 2006.

The 360/PS3 generation was full of bloomy brown "story" games.

I enjoy some good story telling, but goddamn just show some gameplay at least. Show me what 90% of my experience will be like.

Cinematic trailers have their place in the industry, but to have a video game showcase that features little to no actual gameplay? What marketing genius actually thought that was a good idea?

It's a lot easier to market a game through cinematics and visual storytelling than by showing gameplay.

To most people and in many genres, watching gameplay is boring.
