In an age where Artificial Intelligence is being incorporated more into many sectors of work and life, legendary storyteller and animator Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli has made people aware of his thoughts on generative AI, and his dislike for it is intense

Miyazaki's feelings on AI have resurfaced after a recent update to OpenAI, one of the leading names in generative AI. The service brought a new image-generation tool to the public, and upon its release, users across the globe began inundating OpenAI with Studio Ghibli prompts. From X to Reddit, social media is being flooded with AI-generated artwork done in Miyazaki's style. The move has sparked backlash, prompting an old video with Hayao Miyazaki to resurface where the acclaimed director is quite blunt with his opinion on AI.

I understand your stance on art and life is beautiful. 🥺🥺😞

But I have Kat's images the way I like them 😜😜😜😂😂

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
I’m very empathetic to lifelong artists who are seeing their craft becoming even more taken for granted. But it’s inevitable, and AI is eventually coming for most everyone who isn’t working in a trade industry (plumbing, electrical, etc).

This is where the future is now old man applies.. It is very unfortunate for artists but you cannot put the genie back in the bottle. It's not going to be just people who draw either. This will upend how we do things in multiple fronts.

There's a little bit of a backlash on social media right now. Some people are very upset when you post anything that's been ghibli-fied. I think that's a little silly. This is nothing more than a fad brought on by new technology. It's in good fun. It will last for a few days, most people will get sick of it and you won't see it anymore. These pieces of AI generated art are certainly no substitute for the real thing.

I was sick of it after a few spam posts on the Pic that make LOL thread.

There's always a new fad though but have to say the way they turn out is impressive.

Hand made is still amazing but I see just same way as fashion and other mass stuff that also has hand made (but expensive as a result).

"AI is trash and a mistake."

And inevitable and it's ultimately form is indeed when extrapolated depending on many variables scary. Then again we knew this was, again; inevitable. Seeing it's early stages (for the public) definitely raises core fundamental questions.

I'm not worried. AI will apply to the lowest common denominator the same way that Marvel crap etc. does today.

It's been several years since people already started touting the start of a new era but the way I see it most generators still can't churn out a 5 fingered hand

Humans will not be more empowered as they simulate hard earned skill with machines. The people who control the machines will be empowered.
That's true.
The more dependent we are to these tools for our everyday tasks the more it will hurt when we lose access.

I understand its fun to fuck around with AI to draw stuff on your free time but If that's how you are making a living it's a bit alarming.

Ghibli style is just Japanese bean mouth.
You should read his original manga of Nausicaa. It's amazing - the story, the artistry. I find it sad that machines can take just a few seconds to make make soulless pastiches of truly original work. This is a dark path.

Miyazaki's style is incredibly distinctive, and no actual artist with any sense of self-worth would stoop so low as to rip it off so shamelessly.
