Stupid Photoshop question

I'm self-taught, but obviously I haven't found some things yet. How can I transform a b/w pencil drawing into a semi-transparent picture (with black being completely opaque and white being completely transparent)? I use a layer with Multiply for these pencil outlines and then fill in the colors underneath it, but outside the outline there are lots of ugly white pixels that show up when I copy the entire thing elsewhere. If the pencil layer was truly transparent (not just Multiplied) that wouldn't be an issue.

I also have access to Paint Shop Pro if there's an easier way there. Please help me!

You should be able to use the magic wand to highlight the areas within the pencil lines that you want to make transparent and modify those however you want.

When I need to do such things, I use the following method:

1) make sure the image is in RGB mode
2) drag the background layer to the "make new layer" button, making a copy of the background
3) in the channel tab, make sure the RGB channel is selected, and hit "load channel as selection" with the copy layer selected - this will select all the black parts
4) hit delete, this will delete all the unselected white parts
5) now you've got a copy layer that is transparent except for the pre-existing black parts
6) it might seem a little light, so you may want to hit "preserve transparency" and run a large brush over everything in a dark color
7) delete the stuff on the background layer, and make it all white, and you're set

Well, in this case it was a quite messy, quite low-res scan with very many gray pixels. I used a plug-in to turn the layer transparent. Thanks for the tips though, next time I'll make sure to make a better original scan... BEFORE I add all the colours to it :)
