Sturgill Simpson's new album and Anime are out now.

Simultaneous With The Release of His Much-Anticipated New Album of The Same Name

• Grammy Award winning recording artist Sturgill Simpson is merging American rock music and Japanese animation in a revolutionary new way in SOUND & FURY, an anime film that is set to stream globally on Netflix this fall. The film is set entirely to music from Simpson’s forthcoming album, also called “SOUND & FURY,” which will be released simultaneously through Elektra Records. The film features a different anime segment for each individual song.
• The announcement was made this evening by Sturgill Simpson at San Diego Comic-con on a panel with several of the filmmakers.
• Produced by and based on a story by Simpson entitled “Sound & Fury,” the film was written and directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, founder of renowned CG animation studio Kamikaze Douga and director for the animated film Batman Ninja.
• Takashi Okazaki, creator of Japanese manga series Afro Samurai, served as the film’s character designer.
• Additional directors include Masaru Matsumoto of Grayscale Arts (Starship Troopers: Traitors of Mars), Michael Arias (The Animatrix), Henry Thurlow and Arthell Isom of D’Art Shtajio, and Koji Morimoto (Akira). Shunsuke Ochiai is co-executive producer.
• “SOUND & FURY,” the album, was produced by Simpson and marks his first full-length release since 2016’s acclaimed “A Sailor’s Guide To Earth,” which won “Best Country Album” and was nominated for “Album of the Year” at the 59th GRAMMY Awards.
• SOUND & FURY adds to Netflix’s growing slate of animated content from around the world, which includes global anime hits such as DEVILMAN Crybaby, Aggretsuko, and ULTRAMAN as well as acclaimed adult animated series BoJack Horseman, Big Mouth, Disenchantment, and Love, Death, and Robots, as well as the feature film I Lost My Body from director Jérémy Clapin and Xilam Animation.

I have finally listened to the album a couple times at work. I have also watched the first half or so of the anime. I am not an anime person but a huge fan of Sturgill so this is a pretty interesting departure from his previous work.

I really like the album so far but have to listen a few more times (and get a better understanding of the lyrics) before I can really place it amongst his other work. It definitely is missing some of the emotional punch of his older stuff due to the shift in genre but his vocals still carry well although they seem filtered or subdued quite often.

I am really curious to see how the anime does on Netflix and how merging his musical art with the anime arts might change or grow his audience.

For anybody here familiar with anime (long shot, I know ) I would love to go and watch more. Any suggestions for post apocalyptic anime that isn't too outrageous would be awesome! I am pretty ignorant of this subject but would like to dive in and see if there is anything out there I would like.

I'm not sure on the country stuff. I never really liked country aside from some of the old outlaw stuff myself but he helped me grow into it. His voice and lyrics are some of the best I've hard personally and while I like the music on the new album, it hides what I think are his best instruments (his voice and lyrics). I'm going to keep listening to it and see where it takes me though.
