I think every game I've played by him or his company Grasshopper has been at least good.

Shadows of the Damned, No More Heroes 1 and 2, Lolipop Chainsaw, Killer Is Dead, Silver Case. All 👍.

Michigan: Report From Hell and Killer7 look interesting too, but haven't played them. Let It Die looked cool, too.

I like his attitude, too.

So yeah, I guess he must be a genius :pie_open_mouth:

You haven't played No More Heroes 3 yet?

I uh, I didn't even know there was a No More Heroes 3. This looks pretty good, actually, thanks.

I remember deciding not to bother with Travis Strikes Again, though.

Oh wow, they've got all of them on Steam now, too. Awesome.

His neither "Genius" or "Hack"….to me he makes games that are very unique fun but heavily flawed games.

Travis Strikes Again is.....interesting, but I'm not at all a fan even though its supposedly canon.

NMH3 is much more in the vein of the original. Double dipped on it for the Switch and PS5. I had a total blast playing it. So much of the writing is completely off the rails, in a good way.

Neither.
I like when his games are straightforward but very stylish and dislike when his games go full experimental with minigames within a game.

I think that the Silver Case and Killer 7 are compelling enough.

Cannot label him a genius, but also cannot call him a hack. He is slightly above average.

Declining genius? The main beef I have with Suda is that his work has gotten worse over time. He peaked with Killer 7, did good work with NMH / NMH 2 / SotD, then started to make mid games around Lollipop Chainsaw / Killer is Dead and beyond. His games used to be day 1 purchases and now I pass on them.

That really hinges on how committed you are to the Suda-verse. If you casually play one of his games in isolation, ie. without the context of any of the rest of his output, it can be really hit or miss. I don't blame anyone for trying a random game of his and thinking it sucks. But if you become a fan then pretty much everything of his becomes worth playing - even the supposed dogshit. It's similar to how playing with friends can elevate even a bad game. I do not think he's a genius but his style is the substance and it resonates with a lot of people who go on to feel a sort of parasocial connection with Suda.

What I'm wondering is who are we measuring him against? I feel like he's got more name recognition and more games, lots of them good, associated with his name than a lot of the people making games with comparable budgets like uh, the Supergiant games people, the Story of Seasons people, possibly the Clair Obscur people, Swery and his studio... Not that he directs every Grasshopper game himself, but still, to be able to keep it going this long so well takes something special.

You can't measure Suda against people like Kojima or Nagoshi or Nomura imo. They work with massive budgets all the time.

I am just evaluating his work based on the two games I played to completion, while I enjoyed the two they didn't have a lasting impression on me that deserves to be called a Masterpiece.

I could compare it to stuff I played from other quirky and crazy low budget japanese developers I am familiar with too, but I didn't even think about that tbh.

I love No More Heroes, Killer7, and Killer is Dead. I am looking forward to Romeo is a Deadman when I have a chance.

Generally, I think he's good. Not everything lands though.

I wouldn't put him in the genius category yet he's not a hack at all. He's as much of a genius as Kojima is. I like some of his games and don't like some of them. He's good at times and not so good at other times.

I loved the No More Heroes franchise...never played anything else of his.

I couldnt get fully into the 3rd game tho...something was just off for me with it compared to the first and second one.. Desperate Struggles was awesome.

Suda 51 is definitely a hack. I see people obsess over his games. The only one that has some merit is Killer 7. The rest are super overrated and just... not great. They are good enough for maybe a 7/10(once again, good not great)

killer7 was cool but gamecube's library also really benefitted from having something like that
if it were a ps2 exclusive, dont think it wouldve stood out as much

havent played any of his other games
want to try michigan report from hell.

I voted genius because he's smart enough to still be putting out games in this industry in its' current climate. No matter what you think about him, you know when you're playing a Suda 51 game.
