MIAMI — What was to be a celebratory night for Kanye West on the eve of his appearance at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards took a dark turn when shots rang out at a party in honor of the multiplatinum rapper.

Guests were gathered



at Miami's Shore Club to celebrate Kanye's breakthrough year and the upcoming release of his Late Registration album (see "Kanye Brings His Revolutionary Streak To Late Registration") when at least six shots were fired just before 1 a.m. Sunday, according to eyewitnesses.

Miami police and firefighters quickly arrived and evacuated the Shore Club. Police on the scene would would not discuss any possible injuries linked to the incident as they began the early stages of their investigation.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.

Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was shot in the leg early Sunday during a party hosted by Grammy-winning hip hop artist Kanye West, police said.

Knight, 40, was hospitalized in good condition, police said. He was shot during a celebrity-studded party at the Shore Club in celebration of the MTV Video Music Awards scheduled for Sunday night, said Miami Beach Police Officer Bobby Hernandez.

Sonja Mauro, a guest at the club, said a shot in the party's VIP section rang out shortly before 1 a.m.

"I was in there and I heard a pop and I ran out and got trampled," she said.

People attending the party began screaming and running for the doors, she said.
