Photon is funny (and cheap) if a bit dated. (Fantasy scifi unlikely hero story)
Jungle Guu (or Hare + Guu as it will be known) is mostly brilliant but not yet available on R1 DVD. (Jungle book driven irrevocably insane story)
Keroro Gunsou (Sergeant Frog) is the heavyweight champ but has no forthcoming DVD release and is a bit slow on the fansub front. (alien space frogs do menial labor story)
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu is hilarious if short (rambo sent back to high school story)

As for Excel Saga, well, I really don't think the comedy hit the mark often enough, but who can forget Pedro the movie?

You have to check out Magical Shopping Arcade: Abenobashi! I happened to see the first 4 episodes at Anime Central last year and I bought the entire series (4 DVDs). Also check out Mezzo Forte (the OVA and the series), it switches back and forth between comedy and action.

Oh yeah, His & Her Circumstances was excellent. Total girl anime, but I still loved it. One of my favorites, I can't believe I left it out.

Cromartie looked interesting, but I never got around to watching it. Is a group still subbing it, or did it get licensed?

I wouldn't call it "assholish", but Yakitate Japan has quite it's comedic moments. Guess you gotta expect that when they hire the voice talents who did Onizuka and the Principal in GTO.

The original Dragon Ball series is fantastic (if crudely animated). All that Z and GT "His power level's off the charts!" nonsense is unnecessary, but old school Dragon Ball is tons of fun (and pretty funny, too).

If you can handle older anime (I'm talking early 80s here), be sure to check out Urusei Yatsura for a good laugh (and hey, it's got your comedy titties, too).

Also, FLCL is one of my favorite series of all time, but since Kabuki Waq doesn't like abstract comedies, he should steer way clear of it.

But yeah, I own the box and read Kare Kano as soon as we get it at work, so =P
