Summer of PSN -- PSN finally getting its act together?

Y2Kev

TLG Fan Caretaker Est. 2009
So I was looking at all the stuff I've bought from both of the download services this summer and I was surprised at how nice a summer PSN had.

Games like Siren: Blood Curse, The Last Guy, Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty, PixelJunk Eden, Bionic Commando, Elephunk, 1942, Echochrome (though this was early May, so not really summer) and lots of other neat things like the Metal Gear Solid database, PAIN and Warhawk expansions, PSone games, and other cool little things like fantasy stat trackers, regular demos, and PS one applications represent a major stride by PSN to really become a nice service for all sorts of experiences.

What would you like to see from Sony in the future? It looks like they have core competency down, so maybe they could continue to push large sized games like AFRIKA on the PSN? I would definitely love to see more of those. There doesn't seem to be any strict definition of what can and cannot go on PSN-- I'd even like to see more stuff like the Metal Gear database. One of the coolest things about Metal Gear craziness is all the supplementary material that comes along with it! I'd like to see more of this stuff.

I've been pretty harsh re: PSN in the past...there were way too many weeks where it lagged behind Wii and 360 in terms of downloadable games and demos, but it seems to be finally catching up and that's nice.

I'd like more PSone games and I can't wait for PStwo games on the service too.

What would you like to see?

More psone games, more region-specific psn games being brought over (shiki-tei, dark mist) to other regions, and Wipeout HD next month.

HD GTA:SA on psn. Faster framerate if possible. Make it as a PS3 game not a ps2 game dump. That would be stinking awesome. Also Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus (with the added colossi).

My ICO disk is a bit damaged. I would try that boiling thing but I'm scared of it.

The lack of PSOne games on PSN in NA is a joke! It's free money SCEA! FREE! I want to give you money, you don't want it. Stop playing games with my heart!

They have no excuses, there are games that were rated by the ESRB LAST YEAR that are not on the store!

Yeah, they majorly suck with that stuff. But Yoshida did comment on that...he said he wants more. So let's see MOAR.

All they need to do is release

Discworld 1,2 or 3
Final fantasy 7,8 or 9
Broken Sword 1 or 2

And then I don't care what they do with it, I'll be happy.

I agree that it is improving though.

The only thing I want is complete parity between different regions, but that's an impossibility I guess. Then I'd settle with internally made PSN games (that are good) at regular intervals, but I'm also afraid Sony blew their PSN load this summer. I really hope I'm wrong though.

Yeah. PS1 games are really the only thing that's lacking at this point. I wouldn't mind Dark Mist either, there's no good reason that's not on the US store already.

I'd love to see some PStwo titles on PSN. There's a lot of titles that are kinda hard to come by. I'd love to get the Resident Evil games so I could have the whole saga (on Sony's machine at least) all together. Trying to find copies in great condition are rare. Unless I'm not looking hard enough. Plus, whatever titles I may have missed when they first released. Like Ico or SOTC. I've never played either game and would like to try them. And above all else, if it's at all possible from here on out, continue to keep it free! (the service in general)...

Yeah I would like to see more PS1 games. Give me some more co op downloadable games too.

I would also like to be able to catgorize my downloadable games, demos, and retail games into different folders.

Yeah I been buying a lot of PSN games this summer. They been good so far.

I definitely love to see some sort of Castle Crashers like game for the PSN. I love to see more 4 player co-op action/rpg/adventure games. More! More! More! Pixel Junk eden is great when there are 3 players tumbling around though I don't understand why they didn't make it 4.

- more games
- more PS1 titles
- video store in Canada
- Home
- Life with PlayStation
- Web functionality (let me view my trophies and compare on the web), maybe even some Web 2.0 stuff (personal web page for every PSN user, where you can put your screens, videos on etc.)

That should cover it

Well, retail games can't really be categorized can they, but there is already a folder option for installed stuff. Late to the party perhaps? :p

Oh rly? I meant retail downloadable games....sorry.

When I tried to organize my titles it just put my PS1 titles in another folder. My downloadable games and demos were in the same folder. I would like to seperate the two.

Just press Triangle then Options (or Info or whatever the entry is called in English), and then change the Album name to the folder where you want the game to be placed. It will then separate the installed things according to your desire.

In the game directory, hit triangle on any installed game and there you can edit the 'album', what this means is that you can make it so that when you sort games by album, they can be alphabetized or sorted however you feel like.

[edit: beaten, d'oh]

I'd like to see more third party devs jump on the PSN bandwagon and more PSOne games, even though Yoshida said it doesn't bring in much money.

Btw, is there an option to report users based on messages they send? Looking at the recent threads involving social engineering on xbl, it seems that adding that feature would be useful for reporting users who would try the same tactic on PSN.

I've not seen anything like that unfortunately. About the only thing you can do is add them on your block list. :/

I'd like to see in-game XMB for PS1/PS2 games, and game title 'tagging' for PS1/PS2 titles so your friends could see you playing that specific title on their friend's list (much like they can with any PSN/PS3 title).

Note: These changes are stored in some index in the PS3 and are not actual folder support. Occasionally some PS3s have booted up and given some error about rebuilding something. After a few seconds the PS3 continues to boot up fine but all of your "album" assignments are gone, possibly losing you hours of work.

Point: There's got to be a better way of doing this. I spent hours sorting all my games/demos/videos and it got wiped out. They NEED to have some kind of interface similar to the "Copy" one where you can flag multiple items to move into folders that you create. I'm not going in and editing each item again.

I agree with Y2Kev that this has been a good summer for PSN. In fact, up until the release of Braid and Castle Crashers, I actually liked PSN more than XBLA.

That may seem to be blasphemy, but I'd gotten more hours out of PixelJunk Monsters, Echo Chrome and particularly Super Stardust than anything on XBLA save Galaxy Wars. Does anyone else feel that way? I'd be curious if anyone else had similar feelings, because I'm fairly confident I'm in the minority.

While I enjoyed Pixeljunk Eden quite a bit this summer, Braid is my favorite game of the year for any system, in any format, so even if Castle Crashers wasn't fun (which it is, tremendously so), XBLA has shot back up the charts for me.

Sorry for highjacking the thread, but I need some serious recommendations on what to get from PSN.

What I have right now is:
Calling All cars
Flow
Tekken DR Online
Q4B
Castlevania SOTN

I was browsing through the Japanese PSN store and man do they have good stuff. Wanted almost every PSOne game they had out there, then I came back to the US and European store to see if any of those games was available in english... Well you know the rest of that story.

So with all the stuff on PSN nowdays, what is REALLY worth getting? That is things that are fun more then 5 minutes. Thanks for your recommendations beforehand!

Siren
Pixeljunk Eden
Pixeljunk Monsters

The PSN has been ass-stomping this summer. If the stride continues through the year... damn. I may end up owning more PSN games this year than actual physical software :lol

I haven't really been able to hype myself for the pixeljunk games, they are cool ideas and so on but dunno, maybe not for me. I've been thinking about Siren a little, is it as good as the old Silent Hill / Resident games or is it non comparable?

*Wants an engrish release of Alundra*

Yes, PSN has been a ripper this summer - so many titles and GREAT titles at that. I was thinking today that:

KONAMI
should bring the GBA + DS castlevanias to PSN. The GBAs one should be easier to set up - but there's no reason why you can't have a screen within a screen on the side for the map for the DS ones. BRING IT

CAPCOM
so many awesome 8/16 bit legacy titles. BRING IT. Bring the megaman + x series and I'll buy them again because my gamecube copy had shit controls

You're missing all the best games!
Super Stardust
PJ Monsters
PJ Eden
Echochrome
Everyday Shooter

Those are just the ones I can personally vouch for.

Despite all the "Worst week ever" comments, personally I never complained. I just wish they added more PS1 games to the EU store but that's about it.

Agree. I think downloadable games true calling has always been to fill the summer drought months with fun and new things to play and to supplement the game experiences we can get from retail.

On PSN/PS3, I would still like to see:
1) subscription service for the video store.
2) Cheaper prices on the video store
3) User ratings for games and movies and the ability to sort by them (Buy, Try, Ignore)
4) More PSone and eventually PS2 games
5) XMB access during PS1/PS2 games and disc movies
6) Media sharing and grouping for people outside of home
7) Install any full game to HDD like the 360 will be able to
8) Global availability of custom soundtracks, screen capturing and youtube support across all games.
9) More fast forward options for audio files
10) RSS and Internet radio support
11) Trophy support mandatory, if it isn't going to be already

I second that. All the above are agreat. The bolded ones are a touch better /AWESOME *more recommended* Everyday shooter while interesting and hyped for.... I thought was a bit too mellow and missed the mark on the whole frentic twin stick thing. Plus the guitar... was a bit much.

12. PSN downloads to install while downloading. Seriously, installing is such a hassle. One of the things XBL does better.

Same! Updated PS1/PS2 classics as PSN games would be major win!

The long brewing Braid and Castle Crashers has certainly had my focus on XBLA, but before that I've always preferred PSN and its no nonsense approach of real-life pricing. XBLA will remain more constant in its output of 1 game per week however, and PSN will probably still be erratic for a while.

I agree that Sony have been way too slow on PS-One classics. It was announced so long ago, almost alongside the PSP as a feature, but they took so long for anything to release, the homebrew scene destroyed them and hacked the emu wide open to run copies of out own current PS1 discs.

A lost opportunity was MGS1 around the launch of MGS4. Japan has got it, but no western release yet still. Indeed Japan has seen countless releases more than the west, despite Japan typically not buying the most downloadable games. Somebody needs to get far more aggressive with the licensing issues involved as I refuse to believe theyre so tangled it takes 1-2+ years to release something already made and emulated. Will we see any of those Square games over here?

PSN cards is also another issue. I'm confused as to why Gamestop needs to have new installs to cope with them, but then I'm no PointOfSale engineer. Did the same thing happen with iTunes vouchers? Has Sony refused to do a Code system? who knows. All I know is theyre missing out on a lot of consumers spare cash.

I would love to see a ps1/ps2 rental service for the PSN. So say instead of buying RE4 for 20$ in the greatest hits bin at your local store, I could rent it for say 5 bucks and get to keep it for like 2 months. Same goes for PS1 games but at a cheaper price like 2 bucks for 2 months. I guess some issues would have to be worked out regarding ps2 games but i am sure it could happen.
