Are large parts of Florida below sea level?

More or less. The everglades and south florida area are almost entirely at sea level so any change at all is disastrous. The rest of the state varies but most of it is only a few few above sea level. I mean the whole state is essentially just a huge block of lime stone.

i'm from new orleans, and did a study (for a fluid mechanics class) on your dam system. my professor was one of the guys who toured the area with the politicians who went, b/c he had to tell the politicians if it was good or not.

To build anything comparable to what the Dutch have achieved with their dam and levee system would require far more money and skill than what the US Federal Government would ever possibly consider. Whatever funding and manpower would be needed will go to Iraq anyway. For the majority of Americans, New Orleans isn't important enough for such a sophisticated system.
