Survey details Americans' sexual practices

WASHINGTON -- Slightly more than half of U.S. teenagers, ages 15 to 19, have engaged in oral sex, with females and males reporting similar levels of experience, according to the largest federal study of the nation's sexual practices.

The report, released Thursday by the National Center for Health Statistics, shows that the figure increases to about 70 percent of 18- and 19-year-olds. That figure is considerably higher for those who also have engaged in intercourse.

A report by the center nine months ago, based on the same survey, showed that slightly more girls than boys have intercourse before they turn 20. In addition, other national data indicate that the proportion of high school girls who have one-night stands, as well as nonromantic sexual relationships, equals boys'.

"This is a point of major social transition," James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based reproductive health organization, said Wednesday. "The data are now coming out and roiling the idea that boys are the hunters and young girls are the prey. It absolutely defies the stereotype."

Bill Albert, communications director for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy said the news for parents is they must broaden the discussions they have with their children about sex and be more specific. "If they want their teens to abstain from sex, they need to say exactly what they want their kids to abstain from."

The data also underscore the fact that many young people -- particularly those from middle- and upper-income white families -- simply do not consider oral sex to be as significant as their parents' generation does.

Joe McIllhaney Jr., chairman of the Medical Institute for Sexual Health, said the new data confirm trends he has seen as a physician, but said "I'd like to know a whole lot more about the pressure boys put on girls."

Among the findings in the new study were the following:

• Men age 30 to 44 have had a median of six to eight sexual partners in their lifetimes; women's median was about four.

• Among both men and women age 15 to 44, about two-thirds have had one sexual partner in the last year. Ten percent of the men and 7 percent of the women have had three or more partners in that time.

• About 4 percent of men and women described themselves as homosexual or bisexual, but in a finding that surprised the researchers, 14 percent of the women aged 18 to 29 reported at least one sexual experience with another woman, more than twice the proportion of young men who reported such an experience.

The data comes from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth, a survey of 12,571 men and women aged 15 to 44. The survey contractor was the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, which trained more than 200 female interviewers to collect the data by having the subject answer sensitive questions on a laptop computer.

Although the National Center for Health Statistics has periodically conducted that survey among women for 32 years, the 2002 version was the first to include both sexes and to move beyond fertility and child-bearing into broader questions of sexual behavior and sexual orientation.

The newly released data are sure to stir debate over abstinence-only sex education. Supporters of such programs say they have resulted in young people delaying intercourse, but opponents say they have led young people to substitute other risky behaviors. The new data showed that nearly one in four virgin teens has engaged in oral sex.

The study, however, found that only 9 percent of the teens reported using condoms during oral sex. Studies have shown that gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes and the human papillomavirus can all be transmitted in this manner.

"They have not been given a strong enough message about the health risks of oral sex," said Dr. Claire Brindis of the University of California, San Francisco.

Brindis also cautioned that some of the apparent increases may simply represent an increased comfort level in discussing intimate behaviors rather than an actual increase in activity.

More women have had sex before men by 20. Discuss GAF.

More than half of youths age 15-19 have had oral sex, largest federal study on sex reports.

I don't know if it is fair to include a range that from freshmen in high school to sophmores in college. But at the same time they had to learn it somewhere.

Attention whores.. or women starting to figure out what men have known all along.

More socially acceptable for a guy to have a younger girlfriend (within confines of the law of course). And guys often desire such a thing.
More socially acceptable for a woman to have an older fella as opposed to a toy boy.
Obviously there are exceptions, people & places this doesn't apply to, but thats the way it seems to me..

I remember at school, all the best looking girls were going out with older guys. Some real losers too. I didn't realise that until I got older myself... I used to hate it.

Oh and it indicates more men praying on young slags.
A sad state of affairs indeed.

Older guy, younger gal isn't a new phenomon. If anything I'd say the age gap has gotten closer not wider over the past 50 years.

Society is progressing in the right direction, a few more generations and a peaceful bonobo-like society will be a reality, with the aid of advanced biotech stds will be gone and safe-nigh-infallible-birth control methods will become available, free sex will relieve tension and diminish crimes/war/etc, females will become the dominant gender permanently skewing the m/f ratios in their favor(especially once aging's cured, and births plummet even more, given m/f mortality/deaths rates difference).

Most girls do the bicurious shit because they want attention from men. If there's two girl is at the party with attractive men and someone gives them each a tenner, they will make out. This shit seems so tame since it happens every college party and many times at HS.

As for oral, its just a way to keep their women/men. Sometimes eating pussy/sucking dick is less messy and less of a hassle.

This thread is gonna fill up with all sorts of shit/generalizations and overall bollocks.

*bookmarks thread for future amusement*

I'd like to know what the breakdown is on that. Is it all teenage guys getting bjs? Or is it cunnilingus, and how much same sex activity.

Time has an article on this. Surprisingly boys and girls had about equal participation in oral sex. And about 10% of girls liked the ggw action.

um what? You mean the ones without social lives?
It's a median, the actual average would be way higher. People who've had hundreds of partners essentially get counted as "more than 8".
