"He gave such a story to Wichita police and emergency dispatchers on Dec. 28, 2017 -- the night Finch died. One of two online gamers fighting over a Call of Duty match with a $1.50 wager allegedly contacted Barriss and asked that he swat the other. One provided an address, 1033 W. McCormick, that he thought the other gamer lived at. Barriss looked up the number to the Wichita Police Department, called it using a disguised phone number that made the call appear to be local and said his name was Brian or Ryan. "

"Tyler Barriss pleaded guilty Tuesday afternoon to 51 federal charges involving fake bomb threats, murders and other violence reported at schools, shopping centers, TV stations, homes and government buildings across the country. "

"We are comfortable with the end result," McAllister said, noting that he'll recommend Barriss be incarcerated for a total of 20 years if he writes apology letters expressing his sincere remorse for his crimes to police, dispatchers and the family of Andrew Finch.

This burped up cum bubble has been doing this for a while culminating the death of someone that was not even connected to him in anyway . I haven't found anything about the cop who actually shot the victim or the other player who gave the address ...

Edit: "The other two gamers involved in the affair - Casey Viner, 18, from Ohio, and Shane Gaskill, 20, from Wichita - deny the charges against them and are awaiting trial."

Glad for the precedent that this sets, hopefully it will discourage swatting in the future.

It really bothered me how arrogant and apathetic he was regarding the death he caused when he talked about it shortly after it happened. Sociopathic.

I hope this sends a message to the people who do this kind of shit. We’ll see

Sadly, it probably won't. These are the people who have absolutely no real social skills because all of their interactions are online with other angry basement dwellers. They'll see this and assume the guy just fucked up, and that they can do it without getting caught. Hopefully that's not the case.

I've been waiting to see how this case was going to turn out. Good to see he's probably gonna go down for at least 20 years. Hopefully the 2 dickheads that were playing COD get decently long sentences too.

I'll add this to the OP

I would love it if both Sony and Microsoft pushed this story to each and every subscriber like it does with ToS updates. And I hope he somehow ends up serving more than 20 years. This is terrorism in my book. I don't care what the dictionary defines it as.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't be weeping for this guy if he got 50 years.

It's not his first offence when it comes to calling in false threats. He calling in a bomb threat to a TV station in 2015 and his grandmother confronted him about it and he threatened to beat her face to a bloody pulp, burn her house down and kill her dogs. That's just one of about 20 fake bomb threats he called in to various places, and he was jailed over it in 2016 but clearly the sentence was weak as fuck. This guy is a complete piece of shit.

The 2 COD twats are not much better either. The guy that was supposed to be the victim of the swatting, who had given out a false address belonging to the victim, was winding Barriss up and saying shit like "better luck next time", after he knew that their actions had led to an innocent man being killed.

And all of this over a $1.50 bet.

I might be missing something, but wouldn't only one of them be guilty of anything? That is, one guilty party contacted this guy to swat someone. The other was the intended victim. Why would you want the intended victim to get a long sentence?

COD1 = the intended victim. COD2 = the guy who contacted Barriss to carry out the swatting.

COD1 had previously given COD2 what he claimed was his address, except it wasn't where he really lived. It's an address where he used to live with some of his family members, but they no longer lived there, so he knew it was a real address and that there was a very high chance of someone living there.

When COD1 and COD2 fell out over the game, COD2 gave Barriss the address that COD1 had given to him and told COD1 that he was going to get Barriss to swat him. Barriss then followed COD1 on Twitter. COD1 noticed this and followed Barriss back and sent him a bunch of direct messages, goading him into swatting him, including reiterating his address (the false one). Here's a selection of the DMs that COD1 sent to Barriss, all in the space of a few minutes: -
  • Please try some shit
  • I'll be waiting
  • (At this point he DMed Barriss the full address again)
  • I'll have you in prison for 5 years buddy, Casey already gave me all the proof I need bahahahahaha
  • Hello pussy bitch say something
  • Hurry up fuck boy
  • You're gonna try and swat me it's hilarious
  • I'm waiting buddy
  • Try something please kid
  • I gave you everything you need to try something, so hurry tf up
Barriss then called the cops and fed them a pack of lies to get them to go to the address.

Following this, COD1 found out that the cops had turned up at his old address and shot someone. He then messaged COD2 and Barriss on Twitter to mock them.

An hour or two later, the shooting started being reported by the media. COD1 messaged Barriss on Twitter again and told him that they were all in deep shit and that they needed to delete all of their messages, cos it was now being considered a murder investigation.

So, he's being charged with multiple counts of obstructing the course of justice for trying to destroy evidence, and for wire fraud, because he gave a false address to someone knowing that the person he was giving it to intended to carry out a swatting using that information.

He's certainly not an innocent party in all of this.

Ok, that makes more sense. Telling an aggressor a fake address is an odd gray area, but the rest is pretty clear cut. It sounds like he was inciting to violence, which makes him definitely part of it. Though I do think his intentions were slightly different, and perhaps of lesser penalty. That is, 'go ahead, you jerk, do it!' Spoken in the same way as "go ahead, punch me!" Is not of the same level as actually doing it. But the fact that he seemed to celebrate the incident at first is a definite sympathy loser

20 years is pretty good. If this happened in Western Europe he would've gotten 6 months.

This would not have happened in western Europe because cops here generally don't roll up to your house with full military loadout like you're hiding barrels of oil in your basement.

Do they get Xbox in prison?

I hope this sentence deters future idiots from behaving in a similarly immature and reckless fashion.

Yeah that's not true at all anymore. If somebody calls in a terror threat, like some islamist knifing people or shooting people, they have SWAT-like forces that show up in a hurry.

While the policeman should have definitely been held accountable, I can't see how anyone could possibly think this asshole is in any way a scapegoat.

The swatting calls included bomb threats reported at high schools, a middle school, universities, malls, homes, a movie theater, a museum and other buildings -- some of which were evacuated by law enforcement -- in several states. Sometimes Barriss would tell police he was waiting outside of the buildings with an assault rifle and was planning to shoot people as they fled, according to the plea agreement Melgren read from in court.

Other times Barriss would tell police he had killed a loved one and was thinking about setting the building he and the body were in on fire

He did this over and over and over again.

He deserves his sentence, no doubt. I could stand to see fewer lulz about prison rape though. Those criminals are still men, and rape is devastating for them.
