Switch 2 Edition Carts

So, the Switch 2 edition carts are.... confusing.

Here's my experience with the BOTW Switch 2 Edition cart. I wanted to see if it could be played without an internet connection because of preservation purposes. Putting my Switch 2 into Airplane Mode, I got some error telling me that an upgrade was required in order to play the game. Not an update for the Switch 2 itself, btw. My Switch 2 was fully updated. I could not move past the error. It would not let me play the game without first downloading some sort of BOTW update.

Of course, this is problematic. I was worried that the rumors of there only being a Switch 1 version on the cart might be true (And they kind of are, but more on that later). So, a few things to note about my Switch 2. I used the transfer tool and before ever putting in the BOTW S2E cart into my switch, I had already brought over both my save file and the DLC. At least one or both of these things is significant.

So, I did some googling, and I read online that some people did not have an unskippable update prompt (though some did) For some people, the cart worked just fine in Airplane mode. The cart showed the update warning, but still let them launch the software. So, back to theory time. Maybe there were different revisions of the cart and I got the janky one. Or maybe the DLC or save file were creating a conflict.

I asked my wife if I could kindly see if I could load the game on her Switch 2 (since she had never played BOTW nor does she have the DLC on her Switch 2). And whatdya know? In airplane mode, while the game still warns about a download being needed, it launches just fine. I got to the main menu just to make sure it was actually the Swtich 2 Edition and it was.

Also, I can confirm that the cart DOES include the Switch 1 version of the title as well. It seems to include both versions of the game. In my OLED Switch, the BOTW S2E cart is recognized as though it is simply the original cart.

There's clearly other tests that could be interesting, but on the whole, this is weird and has been very poorly explained by Nintendo. A cart that works on both systems could be a gamechanger for cross-gen titles. Honestly, it's kind of amazing.

I wonder if this is consistent with other Switch 2 Editions. If it is, it kind of makes the original carts quite obsolete.

Anyway, TLDR;
  • BOTW S2E cart can NOT launch without an update if the Switch 2 has save data and/or dlc from BOTW (not sure which is the culprit)
  • BOTW S2E cart CAN launch without an update if the Switch 2 has no data and/or dlc from the original Switch 1 version of BOTW.
  • BOTW S2E cart CAN launch the Switch 1 version of BOTW from a Switch 1.
  • Are hybrid carts for Switch 2 Editions the norm going forward? Possibly even for cross-gen?

Add to the list of wank.
Streetfighter 6 inc season 1+2 comes on an gamekey card.

Ok so you have to download it to play..
i can still resell it right?

Well yes and no.. season 1+2 is a dlc code.

Key cards are dumb.. just make some games digital only.

My internet went down for 3 hours last night and I could play every game I had install digitally on my switch 2.

OP, was your OG switch updated before you did the system transfer?

I had both issues on my end.

One switch 2 is setup as a new Nintendo online account, it had no issues playing the cart in airplane mode.

My other switch 2 has all my account and data transferred from one of my switch 1's. That console required the update before I could play.

My theory is that my switch 1 did not have the most recent update that supported game cards.

Capcom has been pulling the DLC code scam for a long time across all consoles, but combining it with a keycard is pretty low even by their standards.

Make real fucking cards with the game on it or just don't bother and make your game 100% digital.

I can't believe how shitty this whole situation is.

The fact this is even a discussion is indicative of a major failure by Nintendo. They had an excellent solution, for once in line with the rest of the industry, and they had to go and mess it up.

Maybe the problem isn't the game, but the DLC or save that had to be 'patched' for a SW2 format, and the game cart doesn't have this ability. Kinda dumb, but it's Nintendo, so...

Has anyone tried a different region Game Key Cart yet?

From the NSFW Butts threads a Japanese version of a game on a game key cart is mentioned as not having censored costumes, and you should should sign into a Japanese Profile to play the game.

Are you hosed if you want to import and play the games online?

Or it needs the SW1 version to access the SW1 saved data. It's super weird and I'm a little surprised both version of the game are on the cart.

My post isn't about game keys. In fact, the BOTW S2E has TWO full versions of the game on the actual card and works on TWO generations of a console.

Yeah, sorry if that was unclear. Switch 2 Edition isn't just a catch all for Switch 2 carts. It's a specific descriptor being used by Nintendo for Switch 2 native versions of Switch 1 games.

See post #4.
You are missing the point. The people who need to be interested are the customers, not the retailers. Retailers will adapt to whatever the situation is because, like Nintendo, they run a business.

The people who actually invest money are the customers. They keep the business running, at the retailers, and at Nintendo. And this Key Card shit is not customer-centric because it leads to a poor/confusing experience.

Game key is fine if you plan reselling games.
If not avoid it.. there is no fucking gain at all
Just all the shitty things about physical.

Imo physical right now died on switch 2

So the same shit as on Switch 1, except that now it affects 95% of the releases on Switch 2.
It might end up a higher percentage on S2 but it began when the Switch 1 came out.

And by the end of S1 a lot more games were codes in a box too. Including many that were previously on carts.

This must've been from outside the US because I have US version of Kingdom Battle and it's all on the cart.

Edit: got my cart at launch, nm. They changed it later to sell as a code.

Game Key Cards are superior to a code in the box from a transferrable rights perspective, but Nintendo still allows publisher to put a code in the box (Tony Hawk 3+4) so they've just muddied the waters.

Keeping retailers interested is why physical still exists.

Is it? You put the card in, it downloads the game. How hard could it be.

I don't know why anyone's buying the SW2 versions of the Zelda games. Can you just buy them used for around $30 and then get the upgrade for $10 or for free if you have NSO?

Nintendo are fucking Cunts. They created this problem solely so they could still sell DLC for a 7 year old game. Utter fucking greedy cunts. The DLC kind of fucking sucked too. It was just some challenge bullshit.

30 bucks? Are you fucking kidding me. They sell used for 50. New they are still 60 bucks or 70 for TotK. Not including warehouse club discounts.

Yes, doing it this way is best. Just ordered Kirby Forgotten Land on sale to upgrade when it comes out later.

You can afford 2 Switch 2 in the same household at the same time ? Are you a billionaire ?
We have the same situation here.
My Son got a MKW Bundle and I also bought one for me.

Lets put it that way, sometimes in your life you have to invest something to save your nerves.
