Switch 2 eshop

So, will there be a separate Switch 2 eshop? Will it show Switch 1 games to purchase along with Switch 2 games? Will you be able to go to a 'redownload' tab and download old Switch 1 games you purchased?

Games like Zelda BOTW could get messy. You potentially could have a Switch1 version, Switch 1 version with upgrade, and a Switch 2 version.

If there are new games playable on both, will there be a Switch 1 and Switch 2 purchase buttons?

I don't think we know much about this right now. But considering the info on the system transfer from Switch to Switch 2 says this:
Once the system transfer has been completed, your digital games will automatically be redownloaded on your new console.
, and there's only one eShop in the Switch 2 UI, I assume its not separate.

This made me realize, will you need to do a full system transfer and lose playing all of your games on Switch 1 in order to play a single one of them on Switch 2?

For example, say you have 20 indie games that are good enough on Switch 1, but want to play Zelda on Switch 2. Will you have to permanently lose access on Switch 1 by moving your account to Switch 2??

I'm glad I still have so many carts in any case.

You can have e.g. two Switch systems linked to your account and have all games downloaded on both systems.

One will be your primary system and the other(s) secondary.

On the primary system you'll be able to play anything without any restrictions.

On the secondary system(s) games will require a DRM/WiFi check before starting the game.

Unless Nintendo changes this I assume it will work the same between a Switch and Switch 2, since they've said they're in the same "family of systems".

Nintendo has that new "Virtual Cart" thing. Have they said this old method will continue to work on the Switch 2, or will you need to "switch" to the new method?

I thought the virtual carts worked similar, but you did seven day checkouts for access to games.

Can't be 100% sure, but Nintendo has said that you can opt out of this new Virtual Game Carts stuff and still use the old system if you want to.

Seems messy to have people be able to opt out and only use the old system for Switch (1) systems and not have that preference available for Switch 2 as well.

I think it's more likely that they'll just remove the option to opt out/choose between them in the future.

But who knows, this is Nintendo after all.

Will the switch 2 have apps like Crunchyroll, Netflix, YouTube, Amazon prime video, etc… for media watching (assuming with 4k support)?

In my case, I'll have the game card, and if there was a good digital sale, I'd nab that, too. Now I'll be able to spread the love. 🥴 That sounded bad.

"system transfer"

I smell incompetence on Nintendo's side and inconvenience on the consumer side.

System transfers already exist for people who want to replace their old Switch (like upgrading from an OG model to an OLED) and it seems like it's a relatively painless process? At least I have never heard anyone complaining about it.

Yeah, it just takes a little time.

If I bought a new Switch (I do have one already), I would expect to be able to log in with my account and access all games that I bought. That doesn't seem to be the case (correct me if I am wrong).

So many non trivial questions Nintendo could have answered by now. If you don't want to do it in your reveal stream, redirect your potential customers to a living FAQ document on your website or something. How can they f this up so bad?

I agree the backward compatibility of saves is a concern once you move to a Switch 2 edition game (unless the old Switch 1 version is retained separately, unlikely).

My guess is the only games that don't support a proper cloud save (like Animal Crossing and Pokemon) will just not get a Switch 2 version at all.

It's definitely separate eShop. It's a new system. You transfer your game data over and then can likely
Redownload owned games but the Switch 2 eShop will likely only show Switch 1 games that are compatible on Switch 2, I would imagine? Some won't be.

You don't have to do the system transfer, you can create a user on the new Switch and then just link that user to your current Nintendo Account. Then you'll be able to re-download everything.

That might be the best solution if you plan on keeping multiple Switches.

The system transfer is more substantial. It transfers everything from games and save files to pictures/videos and individual settings and preferences etc. etc.

I could see them going the 3DS route. on 3DS you had a DSi section that was separate from the normal 3DS downloads.
so they might have a default Switch 2 store, and then a Switch 1 section where you can see all the Switch 1 apps/games.

Will my play times for each game on Switch show up for Switch 2?
Sounds like a minor thing but it kind of reminds me of what I have in my backlog, and it's also nice to remember what games I put a lot of time in.

I don't expect to know for sure how I will conduct this until the system is in my hands. Which doesn't seem right, I should have been sure yesterday.

I'm not sweating it too much because all my digital games are smaller eshop affairs except for Mario Maker. Everything else is a cart. Hanging in the balance is 40 retro collections/sega ages titles/etc. which honestly I'd rather have on the smaller hardware.

I don't expect a super clean solution where I just log in and have everything like PS, Xbox or Steam of course not lol. But I'll figure it out. It remains to be seen at which point of my good-faith effort to follow the process I'll throw my arms up and invoke my modded Switch to ensure access to all my purchased games on the same form factor running natively. I will give them a thumbs up if I don't feel compelled to spend any time on that.
