Switch 2 vs 1440p - What is happening?

EDIT:

OK BIG UPDATE

I just downloaded the demo of Street Fighter 6 (wanna see DLSS in action after all),
and that game forces the TV into 120hz...

so, what do I see when I open my TV's input information?
IT RUNS AT 1440p, 120hz, HDR... what the actual fuck is happening? Why is 1440p greyed out in the menu? why does my PS5 not support HDR at 1440p on the same TV? (not that it would be important for that system... as I'd never need to run it at 1440p, but still a curiosity I feel)

So, apparently 1440p does work without issue when the game forces 120hz, but just refuses to work if you manually want to chose it... but also only in game mode... what? that's so weird...

but hey, I am just glad that this issue turns out to be a non issue. at least on my TV. I wonder if others will have similar experiences. like LG TV owners, Sony owners, TCL etc.

Original Post:
So, when I set up my Switch 2 today and connected it to the TV, I noticed something weird.
it doesn't let me select 1440p. only 720p, 1080p and 4k. 1440p is greyed out.

I then, being very confused by this, I tinkered around in my TV settings. I turned game mode off, and suddenly 1440p works.
wtf...

I have a Samsung S95B, and this is the only device that ever exhibited this behaviour. 1440p works in game mode on Xbox, PS5 and my PC.

why is this important?
well, the Switch 2 only has HDMI 2.0, which means 4K 60hz and 1440p 120hz are the maximum signals it can send.
not being able to use 1440p will possibly negatively affect 120fps and, more importantly, 40fps games.
if a game runs at 1440p 40fps, as it stands, I could only play it at 1080p 40fps.

so, does anyone else have this issue on your TVs? if so, which TV model? have you tried game mode on/off?

the only workaround I found on my Samsung S95B is setting the Switch 2's HDMI port into PC mode with game mode set to off. PC mode I think has either the same input lag, or only slightly more, than game mode.
PC mode has limitations when it comes to image settings however.

What's your bit rate received at in 120/1440p?

8?

Likely an error in HDMI signaling metadata, either the Switch 2 isn't sending it in the proper format or the TV has a bug which isn't reading it properly

SInce it works on the other devices you own, I suspect it's an error on the Switch 2 side

Too bad there's no way to report bugs to Nintendo

Did I understand something wrong or you said it works in game mode? If that's the case, that's a bit annoying but you can have your 1440p right ?

Sounds like you guys might need an 2K/1440p EDID Emulator. I use one to get my mClassic to upscale to 1440p.

Dunno if there are any that can do 120 Hz though.

I had the same thought, the TV doesn't support HDR at 1440p in game mode (I think it does in PC Mode). but even when I turn HDR off in the Switch menu, it still doesn't let me select 1440p, the PS5 will turn HDR off when selecting 1440p in game mode

I'll tinker around a bit more

it does NOT work in game mode. that is the issue.

workaround so far on my TV is using PC mode

Why not select 4K if your TV can handle it?

read the OP...?

Ah fuck NO Nintendo!!

I have a LG C2. Will this mean I can't play a game in 40fps mode (120) using Game Mode???????? Only in 1080p? That's even worse than no VRR docked. Is this really true?

Too much bad news for my taste today.

go download the Street Fighter 6 demo and you will notice that it does run in 1440p 120hz even when it's greyed out in the system settings , at least that's what's happening on mine but HDR is being disabled.

Games will automatically set the TV refresh rate for you if you have it in automatic anyway as I heard some YouTube claim, I wouldn't think too much about it

They can't set the refresh rate to something TV doesn't support. Apparently LG TV's don't support Game Mode at 1440p120 with HDR which is a HUGE issue if u want to play a game with that setting or a 40fps game. You are then forced to go to 1080p.

Shit like this is why I feel bad about a purchase. All of this shouldn't even be a discussion in 2025. No VRR, no 4K120, no HDMI 2.1 etc.

I set games to 1440p HDR on mine

Sounds like an ALLM issue? Hoping it gets patched

I have ALLM off (useless feature IMO). all ALLM does is automatically set your TV into game mode when needed (which on Switch 2 is all the time, as I don't plan watching movies on it)

it's a Game Mode issue with at least my TV... and it's weird. probably also has something to do with HDR, but not sure

well the issue is that it will set it to 1080p, that is the whole problem here. for some reason it won't let me use 1440p in game mode, no matter what I do.
HDR on, HDR off, ALLM off, RGB Full, RGB Limited... only 1080p and 4K work. and it's the only system that has this issue.

I know it will automatically switch, that's how the PS5 also works. I used my PS5 on an old HDMI 2.0 Samsung when I first got it. so in 120hz games it switched to 1080p as well... that was before it even supported 1440p or VRR... but just when it got those I switched to the one I have now.

Some TV's also are limited to 1440p @120hz, my old Samsung had this limitation. I don't know if this is the case here, just providing a reason why someone would want to output 1440p.

the Switch 2 has a hard limit at 1440p 120hz, not my TV. so this is a potential issue for everyone who wants to use 120hz on Switch 2 (40fps is getting more popular so this might come into play a lot)

Can you try disabling VRR on the TV? Not sure if possible. Maybe it's generating a conflict, I've said it before, VRR via HDMI is very conflicting specially with HDR

The Switch 2 doesn't support VRR docked, which means the TV never even tried going into VRR mode. my TV doesn't allow manually deactivating VRR either (I think). but that doesn't even come into play here. even if I turn off HDR on my TV and in the Switch 2 settings, 1440p still doesn't work in game mode.

Let me get my Switch 2 this weekend and do some test, I have a Samsung TV and I like messing around with it as well.

Edit: Nevermind you got it fixed, as I told you games should make it for you, i was also afraid I had to keep the console 1440p manually not taking advantage of 4K but once I knew it was automatic everything was good for me

the automatic switching was never a concern of mine, just the 1440p.

it's so weird tho that it can only use 1440p if the system forces it when switching to 120hz... I really wonder why that is... but, I mean, it works, so at least on my TV it's not an issue. but now I wonder if other TV models might run into issues.
of course Sony TVs will by default, because most (all?) of them don't support 1440p period. so Sony TV owners will have to make due with 1080p whenever a game has a 120hz (120fps/40fps) mode.

Do you have a second display to check the same on?

It's kinda weird and never heard of thing (for me at least) that 1440p only becomes available as a choose-able option when 120hz content is running.

Isn't it just an issue with HDMI 2.0 standards ? 4K120 requires HDMI 2.1.
Also, 1440p isn't an HDMI standard resolution as 720p, 1080p and 2160p are, it's a PC monitor resolution.
On Xbox it's the same if I'm right, when you force 1440p through the PC monitor mode instead of HDMI mode, I think you can't get low latency modes and not even HDR.

On my TV (Philips 55OLED806) 1440p is greyed out too on the Switch 2, so I set it to automatic, enabled Low Latency mode, HDR always on and 120 Hz.
By default it outputs at 4K in 60 Hz and HDR.

In the Switch 2 Welcome Tour, there's a FPS minigame where you have to guess the framerate, it switches the output automatically to 1440p120 HDR on my TV, then when I leave the minigame it switches back to 4K60 HDR.

Just set it to automatic, enable 120 Hz and it will use it in supported games.
I don't think any game supports 40 FPS modes at 120 Hz in docked mode for now anyway (maybe because of this HDMI 2.0 limitations).

LG C2:

1440p/60/HDR/Game Mode ON. Game is also confirmed to run at 60 by Capcom.

Works when S2 is set to auto resolution and forced 4k60.

it runs at 60fps but forces 120hz. probably an input lag reduction method.
On my C2 it apparently is only able to output at 1440p60. Well that's problematic.

That means a 120hz or 40fps game will have to run at 1080p by default instead of a possible 1440p.

wait what? does the game force the C2 into 1440p even tho it's 60hz?

you can't set the Switch 2 menu to 120hz if you tried that. it's like on PS5, only games can actually enable 120hz. it's not like on Xbox where you can just run 120hz at all times.

Yes. I can't choose 1440p in the settings. The game sets the resolution it seems, but apparently the C2 can't do 1440p@120hz in Game Mode.

So, 120hz or 40fps is only possible @1080p. Lol.

wait, but why does it force 1440p then at all? that's super weird lol... I'd expect it to force 1080p 120hz in that case.

I can't select 1440p in the menu either, but SF6 forces my TV into 1440p 120hz by itself.

so this 1440p stuff is indeed getting weirder lol

I could potentially set the console to 1080p. Then it would probably also force the 120hz on it.

This is all problematic because the Switch can't do 4k@120. Even if it's just as an output signal.

EDIT: just like I said. When I put the console at 1080p, it can force the 120hz on it.

This means that's people with TV's that don't support 1440p@120, can only play 120hz or 40fps games in 1080p.

EDIT2: probably possible to set your input to PC, so the Switch can run the 1440p120 outside of Game Mode.

so just to be clear, if you set your console to 4k, and you have the 120hz toggle enabled. if you start SF6, the TV goes to 1440p 60hz?
