Switch 2 will require an internet connection / system update to use an SD card

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

**Please note: a system update via the internet is required the first time you use a microSD Express card. microSD Express cards with a capacity of up to 2TB are supported.

lol licensing costs. If you don't use the feature they don't have to pay, same with Blu-ray players on consoles.

OMG an update?

Truely the first time in console history

Probably just to format the SD card so its encrypted and you don't start pirating.

It's a one-time system update, it's not a big deal, it's not always online.

The price of the cards, and the price of physical games is the bigger issue.

Higher physical prices push you to digital, which uses storage space, and then you have to pay £50 for 256gb of extra storage which will be eaten for lunch by a massive third party title like CoD. I got my 2tb SSD for my steamdeck for under £80. Nintendo should have supported NVME.

Oh no.
Think about all the people that somehow need to expand the storage on their switch but also have literally zero access to the internet.
That dude on a submarine that somehow has taken 200gb worth of screenshots is going to have such a bad time!!!

The bigger issue is the DRM and being unable to resell your games since they give you shitty digital key cards if you buy it in a box now.

Nintendo somehow managed to find all the anti-consumer things it's competitors did in the past (Microsoft with DRM bullshit, Sony jumping asap on the $70 train) and amp them up to a million.

One of the worst console reveals ever imo.

Games will also possibly require an internet connection to install

argh okay i hate this one.
guess we will have no real physical media video games from now on. nintendo was the only one keeping it real
i think most ps5 discs is just a download link as well

Wukong was the whole shebang and didn't even need an update. Those developers are getting rarer though.

The issue is all of this will bite those of us who like to play older games years down the road.

If online activation is required on install what happens if activation servers are down? Same what happens if you need to format a new SD card in say 2044?

This is greedy and annoying.

If we could just not have the internet be a mandatory part of every damn thing that comes out, that'd be nice. The one silver lining is that it's only one time.

This however…

Fuck me this would be stupid…

Don't worry, it'll be hacked/emulated by that point.

Plus we'll probably all be dead by then.

Tbh who cares? Literally everything we have is online now.
Ah yes, the universal response to adding an online requirement to a previously free feature. Pirates will still find a way, meanwhile legit customers get another obstacle and a potential headache if there's a problem with the connection (on either side). And from I understand Nintendo's servers are known for falling apart when there's unusually large traffic.

I live in a hut deep in the woods and have no internet. But two trees down the trail there is a video game store that sells Switch games. So I absolutely need my Switch 2 to function fully offline.

Don't recall you thinking similarly when the Pro revealed, and you had to connect to the net to register your physical drive.

I feel bad for people who live on submarines in Antarctica. They'll never be able to use their Switch 2 when Amazon delivers it.

That's because this is how Blu-ray drives are activated. All devices with Blu-ray disk drives have to connect to the internet for that. Take it up with the Blu-ray consortium and the MPAA.

So once I've used internet to update game and system all that. Off-line on a plane can I still use it? Some planes don't have internet 😆

My guess this is some weird thing they're doing for anti-piracy.

Formatting an SD card never ever involves internet access on any device.

Didn't CDPR say that they fit the entirety of Cyberpunk 2077 on the game card? Why would they come out and say that if it isn't true?
It's not every game but people keep passing on like it is. Just like with some Switch, PS5 and Xbox series games, some physical media won't have the full game on it. It's up to the publishers.

Yeah that makes sense and even though I'd prefer the entire game on the cart, this isn't new in the industry. I imagine the vast majority of games these days aren't all on the disc/cart.

And you are wrong, people are trying to spread this urban legend to confort themselves in their digital life, but, no AT ALL, the vast majority of games these days ARE all on the disc/cart and you can always play them in 1.0 version (the famous "Gold" step that devs brag all the time) version without any online requirement with very fews exceptions lately (Hogwart Legacy, Star Wars outlaws, Star wars Jedi survivor, etc...) with the notable and sad Xception from Xbox where they seem to totally erase physical proper release.

The problem here is how long are Nintendo going to support and keep the servers active? Considering they closed down the Wii U store after 11 years. Some of us like using our hardware well after it has been discontinued. Now most likely this is to encrypt the SD card to reduce the chance of the system being compromised, but thats a poor implementation of DRM if it affects the end user.

As much as it sucks, it's such a norm now that none of this should be too surprising.

I'm more so curious about the whole decision and functionality of the game key cards. It feels pretty odd to me. We had physical and digital. Now we have something that's oddly in-between, lmao.

I don't think this is an "update", but probably some sort of DRM / anti-cheat / anti-hack measure. Probably formats the SD card or something and hits the internet during the process.

1. Nintendo Ninjas are fully deployed now.
2. I am uploading my consciousness into a robot through Elon's neural link to work in the Martian dilithium crystal mines! 😉

Now, the key cards are stupid, and I won't buy them, but it's being reported that you CAN sell them/give them away. So, let's wait for all the facts on that one. (It's still a dumbass idea, even so.)
