Music fans don't have to be in Austin, Texas, to hear hundreds of new songs from the South by Southwest music festival.

For many years, SXSW, as it's known, has provided on its website a library of free MP3s of bands participating in the conference. This year, the festival is making it even easier to listen by providing a huge BitTorrent file (2.6 GB) of more than 750 songs. The songs can be downloaded for free using the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing application.

More here

Wish I could go to the show, but since I'll be stuck in Cleveland/Pittsburg, at least I can practically download the festival for free.

got my wristband a few weeks back, really looking forward to it this year.... Billy Idol is playing it which is really cool.. but I know less of the bands that are going to be there, so I'll likely just hang out at Emo's and assume most of the indie rock bands will be there.. plus I got a film pass this year because there are several movies I want to see, but I think paying to see the individual movies would have been cheaper.

I had heard Tocotronic was going to be playing again this year, but no luck :(

Also, dear MTV: fuck you. The idiots from real world Austin are working SXSW.. and somehow this got leaked to the Teeny boppers and an assload of wristbands have reportedly been purchased by people trying to meet the real worlders... this is not the kind of exposure/people I want coming to Austin.. plus it sucks that the wristbands sold out WAY to fast this year, so a bunch of people who actually want to see the bands wont be able too..

Several of the musicians scheduled to perform at SXSW say the BitTorrent download is great publicity.

"We think it's a great feature," said Deuce Hollingsworth, guitarist for punk band the Yuppie Pricks, whose motto is "buy low, sell high." "People can see how truly great we are compared to those 699 other losers. It's another way for us to show our dominance and supremacy."

:lol :lol

the yuppie pricks are awesome. three of them are executives in large companies here in Austin and are hardcore capitalists. They hire their drummer because no one in their circle would play drums.. and at concerts they pay audience members 20 bucks to come on stage and kiss their ass, its greatness.

BTW, my friend has the interactive schedule on her ipod.. should be really awesome way to pick where to go.. because half the time you have NO CLUE what a band is going to sound like.. there are about 20 or so bands I want to see there, and the rest will just be random bands I wind up seeing.

Has anyone successfully downloaded the file of all bands yet? It's about 2.6 gigs, but it seems like I've been downloading for almost a WEEK! Hurry the HELL UP! Share the wealth of no name shit bands! :D

It seems like hardly anyone cares, as when I'm on Bittorrent, it's not uncommon for no one else to be seeding.
