System Abbreviations/Names - Why do so many people get them wrong?

Matlock

Banned
In the recent past, I've noticed a few misnomers.

Proper:

Xbox (360)
Game Boy Advance / GBA
Playstation 2 (3) / PS2 (3)

Improper:

Xbox360
X-Box (360)
ABG
AGB
PSX 2 (3)
PSX2 (3)

Stupid shit like that.

It's annoying, and in most (well, except for the Xbox/X-Box bit) goes against everyone else's references to the hardware entirely. Why do people persist, then?

what is right?

GC, GCN or NGC

that's why...because the game makers can't come up with the obviously better acronyms so we have to fill in for them

also: typos

edit: Xboxen is obviously the best out of all of those

I've always liked GC because it's so simple. NGC is Neo Geo Color and GCN being GameCube Nintendo makes no sense and is retarded. GC is fine

Here's a question: Is it acceptable to use PSX for PS1? I do it sometimes, even though I know it's technically incorrect.

AGB is what Nintendo uses. I can see why a lot of dev types would do this, since it's what we use at work. Don't ask why. :) Related, Game Boy Color (GBC) was known as CGB, and the GameCube (GC) was the GCN, etc.

I love this, but only when talking about more than 1 Xbox. :) Any nod to Brian Regan gets my vote.

Wak: I left the GameCube out since it doesn't have a generally accepted acronym. However, whenever something is as univerally used as GBA or PS2, it's hard to think of why someone would be erroneous in referencing their names.

Proper Playstations:

Playstation 2 / PS2
PLAYSTATION 3 / PS3

But that's exactly what I posted?

Maybe for internal use, but they've had all outward marketing reference it as GBA--whether it be their website, spinoff products (GBA Video), or otherwise.

Maybe because Nintendo tell us differently from you?

:lol
Matlock "Nintendo Are Wrong"

Refer to my last post.

It seems they do internal and b2b with that, but all consumer-end communication calls it GBA. :p

edit: holy snap GCN it is

AGB = Advanced Gameboy. It was the codename, and its the name pritned on every unit. Look at the serial number.

Which is why NDS is wrong, and NTR is right.

True... I was just pointing it out that it's not incorrect, unlike Dream-box DS. :)

Anyway, in the end, does anyone *truly* care about this? I mean, I hate when I read completely incorrect abbreviations and names in print (articles, ads, etc.) and from the various online media outlets, but with the rampant amount of misspellings and grammatical errors you get online, you'd think system abbreviations and proper naming conventions would be pretty low on the list.

That being said, however, this is a *gaming* forum, not The Elements of Style. :)

I do understand it is quite hard to find out what xbox360 could mean, at least if your brain is pretty small. Xbox 2 would be even more difficult, as you cant know if it means xbox doubled or the 180th part of an Xbox 360.

I am really glad we now have the official Matlock approved list available so we can look up the correct names and even the most stupid folks wont get confused any more.

To make thing even more clear the official trademark icons shouldnt been missing, or even better, we should use the official fonts or images. The proper sound effects (if applicable) should be there too.

In your own post, you got something wrong!

Playstation 2 = just as improper as Gameboy or X-Box. And it IS AGB, internally, I believe.

If ya wanna be all proper and perfect then XBOX should always be spelled out all in caps as it is on the system itself. :) As for the 360 I like calling it the X360 best.

I've never understood that. Isn't it called Neo Geo Pocket Color? So NGC makes perfect sense for Nintendo GameCube.

correct, on the AGB part, but someone allready stated that before.

Matlock, it is PlayStation and not Playstation. There is a reason, according to Ken Kutaragi, why this is true for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 and it is to mimic the WS in WorkStation they had a PS or PlayStation which in Kutaragi's mind was always going to unify gaming (a station to play games on), multimedia and personal computing, but now that it is evolving into a more varied multi-media/connected computer they decided to capitalize the whole name and we got PLAYSTATION 3 as it is the first device that materializes Kutaragi's dream since the day PlayStation was born as a product.

Yes. PSX was Sony's original internal abbreviation for the console, and was the most popular abbreviation among fans during the PlayStation generation... Sony later f'ed things all up with their PSX set-top box abomination, but there's no reason to get rid of what was a fine abbreviation.

Thank you. Everytime this topic comes up, someone says "NGC is Neo Geo Color, so they had to use GCN."

No such thing, it was NGPC.

Unless you consider every Neo Geo home unit a NGC because they display on your TV screen in color instead of black and white. :P

It has to be the X360. If you just type 360 someone could think you are talking about spinning in circles.

Wasn't PSX the official acronym of the Playstation up until Sony up and released a real PSX, which was a PS2-based media box? Then all our PSX abbreviations were thrown a loop.
I still call the Playstation, "PSX" though.

Yeah, I think that's right now that I think more because the IGN Playstation site is still psx.ign.com and called IGN PSX

You're thinking of NGPC, which is Neo Geo Pocket Color.

The one that pisses me off, for no good reason, and isn't game related is the various ways people spell iPod.

It's small "i", capital "P", "o" "d". iPod.

Why do people continue to spell it Ipod, IPod, or IPOD. I know it's stupid, but it still bothers me! :)

Thats because not all people fall for Apples marketing strategy. First step is writing the name like Apple want you to. Second step is saying ipod whenever you are talking about an MP3 Player.
