System Shock 2

This game pulled a Thief on me. Tried it when it came out, couldn't get into it no matter what (coop included, though I actually think that coop kinda sucks the best parts of the game out), forced myself to play a little bit, then it has me by the nuts and I'm thinking it's one of the greatest games ever made.

I'm very close to the end, I think.
Just killed the brain of the Many. Jesus Christ, it wasn't over. Now, the wireframe rooms and the starting area of Shock1, right down to the textures. Freaking awesome.
I'm pumped.

Even more scary about this game is that, well, I think I've clocked about six hours into it today. This is absolutely unheard of, for me. Bravo. And while I never thought I'd say it, I think I like it more than Deus Ex.

The combat can actually get pretty fucking hectic... Right before entering the room of
the brain of the many, I was holed up high on a ledge with two Rumblers below and a few of those floating things. My agility is maxed, and I used a speed booster, hopped down, and flew by them. It took me a ton of tries to not die from the fall and from their shots, but I was sliding like some kind of Tribes expert.
I've always loved the sense of momentum in the Dark engine. Initially, I never thought this game's gunplay could be any good, but there were definitely some awesome moments.

The character customization is excellent. There are so many ways to approach a situation, depending on what you're best at.

And the atmosphere, Christ. Yeah, the models are kinda ugly (hi-poly pack was fubar for me), but they're well-animated and are intimidating as all hell. Much like the Thief games, Shock 2 seems technologically ugly/simple even for its time, but the art is strong enough to shine through. And the audio absolutely couldn't be better. The enemy chatter, the emails from everybody,
Shodan's speeches (Jesus@when you first find Polito)
, the organic noise coming from all over... Yeesh. And yeah, I'm playing in the dark with headphones on.

I absolutely love how the story unfolds through the audio logs. The game's world is big without being so big that traversing it is an issue. The researching, the hacking, the midwives... What an amazing game.

And, now, it's 6:00 AM. Class at eleven, can't wait to wrap up the game tomorrow.

I'm already wanting to play Shock 1, I just wish I could do it with Shock 2's control scheme. And resolution, while I'm at it. I'll load it up in Dosbox anyway, though.

Amazing game. When I first got it, I was living in a College Dorm that required a lengthy walk through shadowy, echoey hallways to use the toilet.

needless to say, when I was playing this game at night and the urge to urinate took hold, I just crossed my legs and waited till morning.

I wasnt aware of a high-def pack, whats the story with that?

Yeah, System Shock Rebirth is a fan-made mod that replaces some models.

I think it's kinda ugly, personally. Midwife face is too human, etc.

Home of the underdogs has it up for download, since the rights to the game are a bit all over the place. Dunno if its not allowed to post this, so just find the link for yourself. But just so you know...

People have varying degrees of success getting this to run on XP, so you'll want to do some googling to get some help installing it on a newer system.

It definitely gets hard as hell. Really a pleasant surprise in that aspect.

And I forgot to mention the music. Yeah, it's all jungle drum loops, but I <3 it.

That they do. Legality's a bit questionable, but HotU has been linked to before (see JFK assassination thread). Funny thing is, I couldn't get a standard version working in XP, so going with their packaged one tends to be the easiest thing to do.

I was under the impression that the multiplayer patch also has some fixes that apparently make it easier to run it under XP. I, at least, couldn't get it to run until I installed the multi-player patch, for some reason.

It probably does, but that's not the only thing you need to do. There's also the Indeo codec to worry about (replaced with DivX in the hotu version; gotta be divx5). Multiplayer itself is pretty damn buggy, heh.

I had no problems running this on XP. I believe there is an official patch that fixes the issue that the guy who sold me the game provided with it.

Oh man, just finished it.

The end was a bit of a let-down compared to the rest of the game.
Shodan was easy enough once I remembered the goddamn ICE-picks, but could the ending have been more cheesy? You have a cool, Gordon Freeman style voiceless and near-faceless main character throughout the entire game, and then you get a closeup of him and his big ol' nose before he says a cringeworthy "nah" and plows a bullet into Shodan. And the "don't like my new look?" thing was horrible. Didn't fit in with the rest of the game at all. Still, the fight was pretty cool (was a nightmare without the ICE) and the buildup to it was awesome, so it isn't a huge deal.

As good as Thief, at least. Better than Deus Ex, I'm thinking.

Nah he's covered. A man who goes living without playing System Shock 2 is a man who hasn't lived at all.

Online co-op while buggy is awesome.

EDIT: Damnit Tain now I have to reinstall this game. As soon as I'm finished with Grim Fandango I'm jumping onto the good ship SS2. Afterwards comes Planescape Torment or BG2, haven't decided.

...If you've beaten it prior, I'm sure. As it stands, we were all just plowing through it and it ruined quite a bit of the atmosphere.

That, and it kept crashing upon loading certain areas. Like, multiple times.

Holy crap, Shock 1 supports 640x480 and has similar voice acting to Shock 2. High audio quality, too. Maybe this won't be so tough to play.

This is typical. I have several perfectly good current-gen games either waiting to be completed, or played through again for good measure, and I suddenly get all hyped up about something totally old school/different!

Loved Deus Ex, so maybe I was missing out prior to that... *downloads*

This game manages to fake surround pretty well with my 5.1 strangely. I played it with a fantastic pair of headphones recently and it just doesn't have the oomph.

SS is better than D-Ex if only because of atmosphere and more cohesive story. But what Dues-Ex does being a hybrid FPS/RPG action-adventure it does better than any other game. It is quite a shame how those 2 games still set a precedent and they're going on 7 years old. Generic Horror/FPS's are all the rave these days apparently.

Damn, I remember playing the demo for the game way back when.. I loved it so much I drove to the store and picked it up ASAP.

Installing it on XP right now - if there's probs, I'll have to go back to my 98 partition.. :(

technically, SS1 is pretty good.
the unmappable default controls are a bit of a lark though
pre-mouselook oops

Yeah, definitely.

The leaning, while awesome that it's in a 1994 game, is kinda hilarious. This dude must be a limbo master.

Oh, and I was surprised to see the jump-climb in there. That's something that needs to be in 8000x the amount of FPSes that it actually shows up in. Granted, it requires a bunch more thought in level design due to how much freedom it gives players (a pretty surprising amount, really), but whatever.

But what Dues-Ex does being a hybrid FPS/RPG action-adventure it does better than any other game.

I'm not sure about this, actually. Deus Ex does it well, no doubt, but I actually felt that my cyber module decisions made more of a difference in Shock 2 than upgrading in Deus Ex, and at the same time, the actual gunplay worked out better in Shock 2.

It's still a tough call for me, though.
