System Shock Remake: A Surprise GotY Contender

remakes cant be goty contender imo.

You Dont Say Ed Begley Jr GIF by CBS

does it play well with a controller? might get it then too

that would be incredible, i would also take a deus ex remake in that style

All is well after a bit of control rebinding.

They had a PS5 demo playable on the Gamescom showfloor in 2022. I played it and noticed the missing sprint toggle right away.
So I went to the Deep Silver business booth (I have a contact there) and asked If I could talk to someone from Nightdive for feedback.
They pointed me to some older guy and I introduced myself (Note: I´m a designer in the industry for over 22 years) and said the demo was nice but the controls were suboptimal for console with the missing sprint toggle.
The guy was all very dismissive and basically told me he wasnt interested. When I was perplexed and said "I´m just trying to help here", he was all "I hear you, thank you" and that was it.
To give you some perspective, I never ever had seen such a reaction from an industry person before - I was pretty disappointed and not surprised at all when the game released with it still missing.

That reminds me of when I saw John Carmack at an electronics store in Austin, Texas. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?"
I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw Carmack trying to walk out the doors with like five keyboards in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the keyboards and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each keyboard and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Parody of actual AJUMP23
I loved the original. I did not pick up the remake because my memories of the first two are so great.

How does the remake handle the cyberspace stuff?

Controller on PC or consoles? Can't speak for the PC version but the aim speed feels off and you can only adjust the speed. No deadzones, acceleration etc. (which a lot of Nightdive ports allow). Grenade hotkey is also busted as you throw at a 45° angle and with a force of a malnourished kid.
Generally speaking hotkeys are very helpfull and they are a bit of a pain in the ass on a controller.

dualsense on ps5 for me. sounds really bad the way you're describing it.

Finished it on xbox. Worked fine for me.

Its old school title so you have to stay back and take pot shots. Works well for that.
I heard that some stuff straight up doesn't work and the rebinding doesn't work, i can't find recent discussions about the game on reddit but like 3-4 months ago the game was still not patched.

It's the only reason why i haven't bought the game yet, online is full of people mad at the controller support, i heard you don't even have a toggle for run so you have to keep pressing the stick? That sound fucking terrible.

I understood that reference.
But I read this meme story the first time with Ryan Gosling and I just can’t bring myself to imagine someone else in it, no matter how often I read it with someone else as main character.

Immsim design. Even one of the games that were the foundation of that. Just like the old Thief games and Arx Fatalis.

Highly recommend this game if you like to use the (many) tools that are given to you to come up with creative solutions for whatever lies ahead.
You will do yourself short by always picking the obvious choices and will probably have a harder time liking this game.

Yeah press the stick to run is one of the worst key bindings, grenades still don't work correctly and aim sensitivity is hard to calibrate.
That said i did enjoy it on my PS4 and finished it. But i'd say PC is the way to go here.

I would gladly play on pc but i heard that controller support on pc is even worse and at the end of the day, the game run at 4k60 on ps5 so it is only a 6-7 euros price difference.

I hate playing with m+k.

Not sure what stuff doesn’t work. Maybe on pc?

I played on xbox, didn’t find anything missing. But then, i mostly play with default controls and just change sensitivity, thats it.

Yeah, there are 2 ways of throwing grenades. One of them chucks it sideways instead of front.

I thought it was oddity from original so just used other method.

Why do I feel like I've read this before lol

As someone who really loves System Shock 2 and only started playing and beating within the last decade and consider it one of my favorite horror games of all times. I just couldn't get into System Shock 1 nor it's remake version. Something about the Tetris setting turns me off. The intro for the original SS1 is cool though but that's about it. I really hope they'll remake System Shock 2 or even start working on System Shock 3 again.
