Take-Two dumps ESPN brand

Electronic Arts doesn't take control of the ESPN license until next year, but that isn't stopping Take-Two from ditching the brand early. Representatives from the publisher confirmed to GameSpot that they are dropping the "ESPN" from its forthcoming title, ESPN Major League Baseball 2K5. The game was to be the last Take-Two-published game to carry the sports network's moniker.

However, although the game will now simply called "Major League Baseball 2K5," the game will still feature the same in-game ESPN-branded presentation as its predecessor, ESPN Major League Baseball. "It's just a name change," said a rep for Visual Concepts, the parent studio of the game's developer, Kush Games. "It will not affect anything in the game…nothing else is changing." Both Kush and Visual Concepts were recently folded into Take-Two's recently formed 2K Games sub-brand.

Presumably the removal of "ESPN" from Major League Baseball 2K5's title is a compromise solution. It allows Take-Two to stop promoting the ESPN brand--which would amount to free publicity for EA--and sidesteps the sticky issue of removing all the heavily integrated ESPN content from the game, which would have presumably caused a delay.

The cover art for Major League Baseball 2K5 will likely soon change, as it currently features the ESPN logo prominently. Also, following its agreement with the Major League Baseball Players' Association over the weekend, Take-Two announced that Derek Jeter would be the cover athlete for its next baseball title.

Major League Baseball 2K5 is still set for a March 15 release for the Xbox and PlayStation 2. After its release, Take-Two will assume exclusive third-party game publishing rights for Major League Baseball, although first-party baseball games like SCEA's MLB 2006 will still be allowed.

I for one am glad to see the ESPN brand gone. It still rubs me the wrong way how it replaced such a classic branding like World Series BaseBall had.

I agree. I wonder if there's a chance they'll revive the WSB brand at some point?

Is it so much "dumped" as "EA bought it, and we can't use it now?"

More like "EA can use it next year, but we don't want to confuse people, so we'll stop using it now and attempt to recreate a brand with simply MLB".

I think this is a good move on Take Two's part. Since they know that the ESPN brand is pretty much useless to them now, it's best to go ahead and start releasing games without the ESPN name as early as possible to draw in gamers that might be interested before they get confused by EA's ESPN offerings.

Yeah, T2 really had almost no other choice here.

The should continue making ESPN games this year, but make them as crappy as possible.

Hehe that was my first thought. Name it ESPN 2005 (not 2K5) and create the worst piece of shit ever created. That bad that will make the gamer swear to God that he'll never play ESPN ever in his entire life.

Rupert Murdoch wants to get into the video game business and he owns Fox Sports. T2 should capitalize on this opportunity by signing up Fox Sports to create a powerful 2K Sports brand.

Yeah, yeah Take Two...you "dumped" them Next you'll be trying to tell us it was a "mutual thing"...

FYI, they still have access to the ESPN brand, and could still brand it ESPN if they wanted to.

Maybe, but I don't think "Fox Sports Baseball 2k5" has the same ring to it that World Series Baseball or even ESPN Baseball does, and Fox Sports doesn't have the instant name appeal that ESPN does.

A partnership could be a great idea however, just not as a branding deal. Something more like Murdoch buying into a minority share, then helping buy NBA, NHL, and if possible NCAA exclusivity. Basically, use all of Murdoch's money to cut EA out of the industry and fortify T2 and 2k Games from any possible takeovers, though they seem pretty well protected from that on their own.

It's too bad EA has locked up the NFL license... I'd like a Fox Sports Football... with JB, Howie, Terry and whomever....

I'd puke violently every time they opened their damn mouthes. It'd get even worse then Joe Buck and Troy Aikman start doing play by play. God save us, kill Fox Sports.

Smart move on Take-Two... say they make an incredible ESPN MVP 2005-2006... and say it sells a ton of games... well next year when EA Sports starts using ESPN people who bought VC/Take-Two's ESPN would think that the EA Sports ESPN will be made by the same company.

They are still going to use ESPN in the game this year, they just won't place in on the box... it is a smart business move, they are looking ahead.

Hey remember when Konami had the ESPN license?? No one seemed to care back then...

And in regards to the Fox Sports license... weren't there a few games that DID have the Fox Sport license? I vaguely remember green cases.... on the PS.....
