Terraria Sells 58M

I missed the Terraria developer blog/forum post from June 24'th detailing how they sold 58.7M copies of the game. They give such updates regularly, but this time they reached the OG Super mario Bros's level.

Terraria released in 2011 and is a Minecraft'esque 2D sandbox game with a little bit more traditional game progression and bosses. It's been kept alive with a bunch of hefty updates expanding the game ever since, and another one is currently in the works.
For such an old game it still enjoys impressive player counts, the PC version has a steady 30k minimum and 40k peaks daily.

To give some perspective, here's a few top selling games.

Minecraft: 300,000,000
GTA V: 200,000,000
Wii Sports: 82,900,000
Mario Kart 8: 70,430,000
RDR 2: 63,000,000

Anyone else find it kind of weird that they’re using the Mario font in that pic?

I feel like this game has been given to me for free like 5 times, and shown up in steam bundles like 12 times. I wonder if those all counted towards that 58M

It's a pretty good game, runs on literal toaster computers and is $10.

It's an rpg with a ton of depth and replay-ability. It starts off slow, but it has a satisfying progression curve, and by the end you are flying all over the place with insane weapons.

I haven't played it since the Journey's end update that came out a few years ago, don't know how the game is now.

My eldest lad has spent pure time on this with his friends and always goes back to it for a fresh play through. Seems to be absolutely dripping in depth.

Good for them, always happy for a dev's success, even if it's not my kinda game. They did get my support though, as I bought it on Vita, Switch, Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation over the years, just to try to see if I could try to figure out what everyone sees in it haha. Just not for me, but I can absolutely see the appeal.

It never fails to surprise me this game is that popular, nobody even talks about it here. Gaf bubble is all permeating

Terraria sold an additional 2 million copies over four months and that's without any update to drive interest. Not bad for a 13 year old game.
The 1.4.5 update which features a Dead Cells crossover (and more) is still in being worked on.

Speaking of your support, we are thrilled to reveal that Terraria has finally eclipsed the 60 million units milestone (60.7m to be precise) - with 33m on PC alone! Simply put, we could not do what we do every day while maintaining the principles we hold so dearly without your support. Thank you doesn't do it justice - rest assured we aim to keep being worthy of that support.

Im thinking in dwitch 2 port. It can boost the sales even further.

It's still my most played game on Steam, although Grim Dawn is quickly catching up. I was there from the start, pretty insane to see how much the game has evolved and how much stuff has been added over the years, all with free updates.

Pretty sure I did play 5 minutes or so over a decade ago probably before they started tracking playtime. Guess I should give it another go.

I loved the game. Put a ton of time in it. I liked using cheat engine on it at times and descending to hell.

It's one of the first games I bought on Steam after my friends forced me, a proud console gamer to install Steam for Bad Company 2.

If you need more encouragement to play it, it's the 8th best rated game on Steam.

This reminds me, I saw Starbound pop up on Xbox a week or so ago, anyone tried it? Looks exactly like Terraria, but INNN SPAACE!

And holy fuckin shit at 200 mill copies for GTAV.

Also, I’m kinda surprised Elden Ring outsold Hogwart’s Legacy. Not surprised that Nintendo dominates the list.

Starbound is alright, I put in 64h in it, but that's only 10% of what I spent on Terraria. It's unfocused as one would expect from a game where you visit dozens of procedurally generated worlds. Terraria's magic trick is to draw you into the map you play on, exploring all of its nooks and crannies.

Starbound is in maintenance mode since 2019 when development ceased.
