System Specs:
Athalon XP 2000+
1Gb DDR 266
Radeon 9700Pro
WindowsXP Corp. SP1

Here be the situation. Played HL2 through Nova Prospekt, all of a sudden the night before last it started crashing with a stuttering sound loop, or a system reboot. I've cleaned the machine out (physically - removed dust and reseated mem + PCI cards) at the urging of steampowered.com I have also moved my sblive card higher up on the PCI stack.

Sound problem is gone, the game seems to have stopped crashing. Now though after screwing around with the display adapter drivers, I am getting tons of graphical corruption like that referenced in the above SS. I have tried using ATI's newest drivers, their beta drivers for HL2, and the next oldest set of standard drivers, all to no avail. I have also re-installed all of steam and HL2.

This seems to me to be a problem with HL2 loading certain textures and game objects (crates and enemies sometimes are wireframe or do not appear - yet they cast shadows) however I know it's not really the game's code, because I've played through these areas already and tested them functional.

I would like to not believe that my graphics card is malfunctioning, because to date I have not had a problem with another game, or and performance drop, just this weird texture glitch.

I think next I will take the digital axe to directX, see if I can get anywhere with that. Any available outside opinions would be wonderful, thanks!

I had a similiar problem. Hold on, let me dig up the fix.

Here, try this.

Basically, it'll just check your HL2 files and replace any of the corrupt ones. The wireframe and missing textures are a result of not being able to reference the proper file.

I don't know how things got to be that way for you (my initial download was fucked and never quite functioned properly), but if it works, awesome. If not, well, try registering at the Steam forums.
