My standouts would be GTA5 and The Last of Us

But there were many good looking games on the PS3

Beyond Two Souls
Heavy Rain
God of War Ascension
God of War 3
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 3
Infamous 2
Gran Turismo 5
Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time
Killzone 2 and Killzone 3
The Last of Us
Metal Gear Solid 4

These are some of the games that mastered the Cell processor and the intricate architecture of the PS3.

Killzone 2, God of War III, God of War Ascension, Uncharted 3 and Grand Theft Auto V. No other game came close to these imo.

Overall I think most impressive was Uncharted 3. Not just because unlike GoW had a controllable camera, or because it looked a generation above Uncharted 2, but because it could legit be a PS5 release and still be able to impress.

*Gravel below is not a 2D texture, but the best use of bump mapping I've ever seen:

Especially in motion and in particular when crazy stuff happens like burning chateau, cruise ship level and exploding plane. It's simply unbeliavable.
Unlike previous two titles, PS4 "Remaster" simply bumped resolution from native 720p to 1080p and framerate to 60fps. No texture changes (for obvious reasons), some physics and lighting downgrades.

Apologies for the many shots, had to quickly chose from more than 400.

Despite all the hate it got in the beginning, Sony really gave the PS3 all it got and delivered incredible games that pushed the limits of its complex architecture. They even captured the attention of Hollywood which is a big deal if you want to bring more awareness of your IPs to the masses and rake in even more revenue.

Also, Uncharted was what inspired me to get into journal writing. I thought that Nate making it out into a scrapbook with his artwork and wise Crack jokes was the coolest thing ever.

Ridge Racer 7 (1920x1080 noAA 60fps with good consistency)

City tracks at night (dem light streaks) and the waterfall through to a cave-tunnel with nicely faked wet road reflections was a real highlight. Nice high res menu presentation and CG for the time too.

I know I’m an outlier, but the first impression of Boletaria in Demon’s Souls was quite something. I think the game was quite polished graphically with amazing animations except for the frame rate drops, sure. To this day, I think it looks much better than Dark Souls.

Two days ago I switched my XSX with my PS3 in the cabinet. XSX is collecting dust since a few years now, PS3 still has some amazing games to play. Disassembled both of my Dualshock 3s, gave them a good cleaning with alcohol, so they feel like new controllers and I‘m ready to platinum a few missing games. It was imho the best generation of all.

To this day I'm still very impressed with what Guerilla achieved with Killzone 2 on PS3. Will be leaving this DF Retro video on it here in case anyone missed it.

I remember vividly downloading the KZ2 demo blind and that opening scene blew my socks off. I could not accept that was NOT a CG cutscenes. Then the gameplay started. Immaculate. My first ever FPS even before Resistance and COD. And it pretty much spoiled them!

MGS4 being a 2008 game didn't have the right to look that good, I was shocked and I played it years after it released

Same with GOW3, that game is crazy how good it looks graphically
