The Adventure Island series has a twisted case of a philandering hero

Thanks to Thane Gaming, new info has come to light, so I rewrote all the entries because I want to document this for future archeologists.

The star of the Adventure Island series is Master Higgins (known in Japan as Takahashi Meijin) and in every game, he has to rescue his girlfriend, who in Japan is *always called Tina. Remember that name.

Adventure Island (NES: JP 1986, US 1988)
When the first NES game was released in the US, for some reason the instruction manual says you have to rescue someone called Princess Leilani. When you beat the game, however, you rescue your beloved Tina. So this is clearly a case of the manual changing names up and Hudson not caring to modify the game's code to reflect that change.

Adventure Island 2 (NES, 1991)
For the sequel, the US instruction manual tried to do damage control, and instead made it worse. The story states that Leilani is safe, but now it's her sister that has been kidnapped. Guess what name the localizers used for the sister's name? Tina!
The game's ending, again, says you rescued Tina (which matches the manual's story), but then shows Higgins and Tina hugging and kissing. So if Tina is allegedly the sister, why are they both making out?

Super Adventure Island (SNES, early 1992)
Amazingly, the first SNES outing was released before the rest of the NES games. I guess Hudson wanted to try something different in Japan, because the story is that Higgins is very popular with the girls, so he's now dating someone named Miss Jungle Jina. For the US manual, the localizers took that name and localized it as "Jeannie Jungle". Bear in mind that, visually, she looks very similar to Tina.

Adventure Island 3 (NES, mid to late 1992)
In the third NES game, released a few months later, Higgins goes back to Tina in the Japanese version. For the US version, whoever wrote the manual must have liked what the other person did, because they kept the "Jeanie Jungle" name. This time, however, the game itself doesn't name who you rescue. But she looks exactly like Tina, so it's definitely her.

Adventure Island 4 AKA Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Jima IV (Famicom, early 1994)
Japan only. Girl is still Tina.

Super Adventure Island 2 (SNES: US late 1994, JP 1995)
In the second SNES outing, the US manual says Higgins dumped "Jungle Jane" (spelling mistake or a Tarzan joke?) for Tina. The Japanese version makes no mention of this. Also, the game's story takes place after they get married. When did they get married, you might ask?
Well, in New Adventure Island for TurboGrafx-16, released in mid 1992, the story is about Higgins and Tina getting married. So I suppose Super Adventure Island 2 is a sequel to that game.

So, to recap: according the US manuals, Higgins first hooked up with Leilani, then hooked up with her sister Tina, then dumped her for Jeannie, then dumped her to go back to Tina. Even though they are all really Tina. Jesus Christ.

The crackhead(s) that wrote the manual created a hodgepodge of philandering relationships that caused a rift in the time-space continuum and no one noticed it until now. You know, Tina, we really are in the dark timeline.

I think it was pretty well documented that English localization teams in the 90s were terrible and largely did a horrible job most of the time.

Either way, this was still a fun read!

Ouch, my nostalgia. I remember grinding out some stages to get more animal.. Cards?
I think it was on the gameboy. Fun times.

You do know that the original Wonder Boy arcade game was developed by Escape, under contract with Sega. Escape owned the copyright for the game itself, but Sega owned the name and characters. Therefore Escape had the rights to license the game to Hudson for home console ports, but Hudson had to come up with a new name and protagonist for their version, hence Adventure island and Master Higgins.

Yeah game manuals for some games back then were crap, translations were made on the fly. Only real good ones were rpgs, and 1st party games. Then again it makes for some interesting reads and ponderings.
