The Anti-Selfie Stick movement gains a powerful new ally - Ben Carson!

The cause has been furthered by Dr Carson's condemnation. I feel as though a ban on selfiesticks is possible in a Ben Carson America!

Ben Carson is sick of selfies.

The Republican neurosurgeon and 2016 hopeful penned an op-ed for the Washington Post Outlook section’s spring cleaning feature on why the practice of taking a picture of oneself needs to go. This past year, Carson wrote, the practice completely crossed the line with the introduction of the selfie stick into the American mass market.

“The selfie stick ushers in a new, even worse and more dangerous era for the form. The stick doesn’t just validate selfies by building a cottage industry around them. It also says, ‘Snap them everywhere!’” he wrote.

“Please stop.”

Carson said that selfies reek of “obvious narcissism,” and added some unsolicited medical advice: that selfies are dangerous. He pointed to a Polish couple that fell off a cliff last August while snapping a pic and a pilot who killed two in a selfie-induced plane crash as proof.

“Focus your camera on your surroundings, not on yourself!”

Carson has stated that he is exploring a long-shot run for the Republican nomination in 2016. With the recent announcements of Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Carson is expected to make up his mind soon.

The piece did leave one important question unanswered: whether he would translate this bold anti-selfie stance into policy on the campaign trail, where supporters are known to pester preferred candidates for a quick pic at every turn.

Welp, guess that means I'm for selfie sticks now.

All kidding aside, I don't really care. Let people do what they want to do.

I don't understand. How does this relate to President Obama, exactly?

If he's for it, they're against it!

These happened?

"These things are dangerous and they need to go! I don't care if many hobbyists around the country love them, and I don't care if most people are responsible about it! Too many accidents happen and people die! It's irresponsible. Hmm? Sorry? Gun control? No no no no, no need for that. I'm talking about a much more perfidious problem. Selfie Sticks."

Never thought I would say this once, let along twice*, but I agree with Ben Carson. Fuck selfie sticks.

*His comments on the South Carolina shooting were on-point.

Im glad somebody else understands the issue.

They're dumb, but they don't really bother me. I guess I've only seen one person using them, so I don't have any negative experiences.

They seem useful for group photos at a bar or concert or something. I almost wouldn't mind having one when I'm in the front row of a show.

Haha, clever girl

If people like taking selfies let them take selfies, stick or no stick.
Selfie Sticks are basically just the new taking photos or videos with your iPad. If you want to look silly taking a picture, go ahead. People will laugh. But eventually it'll pass and become somewhat normal and sort of accepted or ignored.

I've never seen anyone in real life with a selfie stick and I also don't understand why anyone cares.

Honestly, while I wouldn't buy it because it kind of looks silly. I could've used it on my solo trip to Paris. It's nice to at least have some pictures with yourself in it without having to give your camera/phone to a complete stranger.

I had no idea these things were such a big deal. I thought they were a joke.

I was in Vegas last week and there was someone taking a picture with a selfie stick every 10 fucking feet.

But people want to pretend that people taking pictures/having pictures taken of themselves doing things or in specific spots didn't exist before cell phones.

Don't really care about selfies, or selfie sticks, but keep that shit out of concerts please. It's fucking annoying when you have a big ass selfie stick in your view, because the person in front of you cant stop taking goddam selfies.

I was at the Getty Center (which is AWESOME BTW) this past Easter Sunday and I overheard a woman talking to her family. She said, ”I think it’s about time we bought a selfie stick.” It’s a good thing I’m quite the introvert or else I’d feel compelled to yell “NO! NO IT IS NOT TIME” at her.

I did see a bunch of selfie sticks though. What is the purpose of them? Is it that you do you not trust others to take pictures of you?

Sometimes you want to take a family pic and someone's not around to take a picture of the whole group. Like on a balcony during vacation or on the beach when the sunbathing crowd is gone, etc.
